Ok Guys/Gals, my small contribution to our pics.
I made the folder public in hopes more Dekons show
up...<hint,hint> : )

Thank you Karl.

Joe...if you
want em better quality, give me a buzz. Hmmm...Jerry
Jolly...interesting name! : )
Was wondering about space between
IMSA flares and body proper. Did all roadracers leave
these open, or fill with flat black honeycomb grille?

And air scoop, top roof(air for dirver?). How popular
was this amongst the racers?
re chassis#, best i
can make of it; seems 1st digit scratched, followed
by 0, 3(8?), 4. Which leaves me confused, as after
quick search on your site, it doesn't seem to
match<shrug>. I'd really like to hear your expert opinion on
this beast. Was it real or a Mirage? lol Any info
would be appreciated. Thanx.

NO!! NO!!! DAMMIT, NOOOOO!!!! It appears that
some f#@*ing a**hole has destroyed an original dekon
monza! The monza here is(was) the #1003 chassis that was
originally raced by michael keyser in 1976 in IMSA. He sold
it to Brad Frisselle in 1977, and brad raced it in
IMSA in 1977-79. In 1978 brad became only the second
driver(Keyser the first in 1976 in #1006) to enter a monza in
the LeMans 24 hour race in France. The car remained
in it's original condition until apparently the late
1990's, when it was repainted. I have a pic of the
original engine on my photo gallery on my page. I can't
believe someone would repaint it, GRRRRRRR!!!
To
answer your questions, yes, the naca duct on the roof
was for driver cooling. In the IMSA AAGT era it was
legal to have the rear of the bodywork open to allow a
release of trapped air. Today it is not legal due to
debris flying out at competitors(at least it is in the
scca). The rear of my monza racer must be sealed for
this reason.
These photos make me very sad that we
have lost an unrestored original dekon. Oh well, maybe
a good media blasting could recover the original
paint job. I saw this car at the 1987 monterey
historics, at it was very fast!
Anyhow, thankyou for
sharing the photos.
Joe

Joe
Wow...sorry to sadden ya, espescially so
early in the morning! It's probably presumptious of me,
but how are you so certain the car was chassis #1003?
My old eyes(i'm 37) would put money that last digit
is a 4(couldn't be an A?). Or are you relying on
other cues???. How bout sending me your address, and
i'll gladly mail you the pics themselves, postage is
on me : )
I'm surprised someone would deface an
original Dekon. $100,000 is not somethin you frivolously
toss away...no matter how fat your wallet!
I had
said mildly modified, as the front seemed 'softer'
than the others(?). But as this one was the first
up-close and personal, i'm a definite newbie!
Hey!
Better idea...i'll hand-deliver em, and you can let me
take a few laps in your GT1! lol<just kidding>.
That beast must be an incredible rush to play with!
Question on your GT1; you mention it once had a Buick V6.
Was it a Stage 1 or 2? 3.8 or 4.1? And i'm presuming
most roadracers kept only the factory
windshield(glass) and filled the rest as plexi?
re the flares,
thanx. I was curious why i've seen photos of em in both
configs, while the Porsches used their huge turbos to fill
that space on some models!
If you ever do bump into
Mr Malone(the graying gentleman in the jumpsuit
leaning into the car, 1st pic) out there, please thank
him for being so patient with me! I was buzzin round
his racer like some hopelessly lovestruck groupie! :
)
I am serious though bout snailmailin you the pics,
as i'd like to know more bout this
puppy.

thanx

Sorry for sounding so angry, I'm just very
passionate about these cars. The interior, roof duct, and
shovel front end (PHASE V) are unique for #1003. I don't
know what you mean by "soft" front end? The stock
windshield was always used in that era (1970'-80's). In the
mid 1990's plastic front windshields were accepted by
the major roadracing groups. The 84 at the end of the
plaque may have stood for the cars number, at least in
1987 it did. In 1987 the "then" owner lived in garden
grove, about 10 minutes north of me. My big "BEEF" with
vintage racing is when some buys an old race car, and
instead of research it's history and restoring it to it's
greatest moment of glory, they modernize it so they can
"BLOW AWAY" the other cars. Vintage racing is for
getting up close to the cars that you loved as a kid, but
could never get nowhere close to back then. Sadly, some
vintage cars get abused by ignorant owners who have no
pasiion for these cars. Maybe some day , If I strike it
rich!!, I can save some of these dekons. Thankfully, all
three of al holberts cars are being lovingly restored
by a dekon fan in newyork. My car... I don't know
the size of the v6, only that it was fuel injected .
When I bought my car it still had some of the fuel
injected components on it. If I had enough space for a
passenger seat( cross-bracing in the way), I would not mind
giving all the mirage club members a lap or two in my
monza. Now that the hbody club is formalizing an
official membership, perhaps the mirage group could do the
same, huh? Joe

Hey, passionate is good! It's what drives all
these clubs, races, etc...
Personally, I'm having a
difficult time believing someone would actually desecrate
and devalue(!!!) such a unique Dekon...especially it
having all these unique features. Very sad indeed. Naive
question though...if these cars are participating in a
'vintage race', don't the rules state the vehicles must
remain in an 'original' condition? This was why i
originally was wondering if this particular one was a fake
or the real thing....as i hadn't seen it on your
site.
If Mr Malone ever does visit the nearest track to
me(Daytona,~1.5 hrs N of here), i'll smack him silly for
ya<just kidding!>
BTW, my initial impression of its
'soft' front end does seem to have been a byproduct of
sensory overload ; )
re taking a lap or two in your
GT1, hey! i don't care where i sit....just strap me in
anywhere, and hang on! woohoo! : )

re formalizing
club, i'm all for it. The only immediate hurdles i see
are the logistics. Hopefully we could also get some
pointers/model from the established ones like CVOA/HO7
Registry?I was kind of hoping though that we could all join
in(_ALL_ the hbodies) as one big group and pool our
collective resources, instead of further fragmentation(ie,
i've lost count just how many yahoo hbody clubs there
are!) Unfortunately(or fortunately, whichever way you
look at it), these cars are just not as numerous as
camaro/mustangs/corvettes. It just seems to me a waste of resources and
potential if we do otherwise. And yes, i still think each
individual model/nameplate could still enjoy its own
distinctiveness. A formal national/international club could only
help us _all_ in trying to keep these machines alive
and well...especially convincing manufacturers to
bring back some of those hard-to-find parts!
Sorry
to ramble so long...

Hi,
Rambling is good for the soul, so ramble
away! There is a great deal of discussion on the club
thing on the hbody listings now, so things are looking
positive. Yes, a vintage car should be in original
appearance, but the vintage racing bodies say as long as it
"Looks like it is from that era" then it's ok. There are
a few vintage races which pay out good money, so
I'm sure they are sticklers on authenticity at those
races. Do you have a pic of your friends imsa-inspired
car? If it's an hbody, I'll put a pic of it on my
site. Mr. Malone may have bought the car that way, so
don't be too hard on him, but a serious talking to is
in order. However, he is bringing the car out to the
tracks, and apparently is doing quite well to defend the
monza name against those VW kitcars... er, I mean
porsches(HA HA). I bet a twin turbo v6 buick would run rings
around thier twin turbo flat six rubber band powered
pieces of sh... well, there I go again, showing my chevy
thunder pride. Did you know that the last dekon made,
#1018, was a monza for Al Holbert to race in the 1978
IMSA series? It has(yes, it still exists) a big block
aluminum can-am engine, a transaxle, and serious
aerodynamic down force. John Bishop, then pres. of Imsa, said
"no way, it might chase away the porsches". Oh, but
it's ok to allow the twin turbo 935 in, then add
weight to the AAGT cars making them uncompetitive.
Politics, politics, politics...
oe

Joe, you mentioned someone in NY restoring the three "Holbert Dekons". Is this "big block can am" car (#1018) one of those cars? And how many bonified "Dekons" were ever made?

Ken

Yes, the #1018 is being restored, although it was
never even tested, just built. The numbers went up to
#1018. #1013 was never built due to superstitions. There
were two camaro circle track cars built, so that
leaves 15 hbody's. In 1986-87 I saw a tubeframe monza
win two scca gt1 titles here in so cal, and was told
it was a post-dekon kit. I was never able to verify
whether or not it was a real dekon. Joe, monzaman_gt

Wow, I never knew there were that many! What #'s
(besides 1018) did Al Holbert own, and what are their
history (which one won in 76 & 77)? Also, which ones did
Michael Keyser own? Any other significant history of
Dekons w/ other owners?

Very curious,
Ken
