Have 75 Vega with Saginaw trans. - the clutch adjustment screw is on the passenger side - which way, clockwise or opposite, do you adjust it for clutch wear?

bill,

Hopefully someone more familiar with
your application will chime in. My reference is from
the cable clutch on a 80 Starfire HB.

If the
clutch wears, it needs more travel in the clutch fork.
To get more travel, you have to loosen the cable.
Therefore, you would turn the screw counter-clockwise
(unscrew it) until you have about 1/2" or so of play in
the pedal. This means that the clutch is fully
engaged.

DISCLAIMER: not sure of the setup on a 75
vega, assuming it's a standard arm with pull-cable
setup, my reference is on driver's side, but should be
same, etc. etc.

Hopefully this helps. If not, at
least I have restated the problem?

Joe

The proper way to adjust the clutch is with
clutch pivot ball on the top of the passenger side of
the bellhousing. What you are trying to do is get
clearance between the throwout bearing and the pressure
plate fingers. When you adjust the pivot ball, this
will result in the pedal freeplay. Getting freeplay at
the clutch pedal by adjusting the cable will not
necessarely give you the clearance between the throwout
bearing and press plate. With the pedal all the way up,
adjust the cable to remove all clearance between the
cable end and clutch fork, now go and adjust the pivot
ball on top of the bellhousing, screwing it out will
result in more freeplay, screwing it in will give you
less. Ultimately what you are really trying to
accomplish is getting a certain gap between the clutch disc
and flywheel when the pedal is pushed down
disengaging the clutch but unless you drill a hole in the
bellhousing to be able to insert a feeler gauge doing the
pedal freeplay adjustment is a round-about way to
achieve this. Just remember, take the slack out of the
cable then make your adjustment on the pivot ball. Do
not rely on using the cable to get pedal freeplay.
Hope this helps, Clyde

I stand corrected and further educated. Thank you
Clyde for setting me (and I am sure others) straight on
this. Now that you have said it, it makes SO much more
sense.

Sorry all for the misleading info. This
is one of the reasons I wanna use a hydraulic
clutch! :)

Joe

Thanks for cluthch info. - here's a little tip
for restoring the "chrome" on door panels - after 25
years, the chrome appearing trim may be peeling - that
great stuff, aluminum tape, can be used to repair it by
cutting thin strips and putting it over the chrome strip.

I have done this and what I found works best is
something I picked up in a hobby shop. It's a sheet of
"chrome" used for model cars. It's very thin and has a
good shine and seems to stick better than some other
chrome tape I've tried. If anyne is interested I can
look up the name. Clyde

Joe, don't feel bad, A lot of people I have
spoken with are confused as to how to adjust this
clutch. Most of us are not used to this cable setup, and
are used to traditional clutch linkage that pushes on
the fork instead of pulling it like a cable does.
What's worse is if you don't know that the pivot ball is
way up there on top of the bellhousing, or what it is
when you do see it, you have no other way to get any
pedal freeplay except to "adjust" the cable. This will
give you a false sense of a proper adjustment because
it will provide the pedal freeplay but will not
actually adjust the clutch the way it should be. Hate to
admit it but I think this is how I burned up my first
clutch, oh well, live and learn. Clyde
