Drive shaft shortening

What has everyone used for a drive shaft in your
Vega V8 swaps? The stock 4 cyclinder shaft is too
long.

I purchased a bunch of parts from a guy
that had a v8 in a Vega and there was a driveshaft in
this bunch of parts. The shaft works, but I think it
might be too short and causing my driveline vibration,
even w/new U-joints.

I guess my questions is.
How much shorter should the shaft be for the v8 vs.
the 4 cylinder? I am using a turbo 350 w/the Monza
short tailshaft.

Thanks for any help as I work
out the bugs :)
-Wade

I am using the Stock v8 mounts, but I think the
person must have used a 4cyl driveshaft and shortened
it. It sure doesn't go into the tail shaft very far.
Mabeye I am just being picky. Anybody have a drive shaft
laying around they could measure?

Wade, on the H-body main club, Robert posted the
lengths of the 3 or 4 most common drive shafts. But a way
to get the 'right' one is get one from a car with
the same transmission and rear end as you (taking for
granted you are using either the 6.5 or 7.5 H-body rear
end).

Put your yoke all the way in the transmission,
then pull it back out 1 inch. Measure from the center
where your U-Joint cup goes to where the
center of
the cup where your U-Joint goes @ the rearend. (Put
your strap on the pinion yoke).

I hope this
helps.

Hi Margie, i just wanted to let you know that i
have sprung a leak over your last message.I personally
like to keep it in, not pull it out, and achieve
ejaculation.I have a radical camshaft that does wonders for
tired rearends.I will have it lubricated and will make
sure your bearings will not spin.As far as the
strapping is concerned,Iam sure you will get one hell of a
ride from this big block, Keep on pumping, always use
20w/50, and whatever you do, always swallow excess
lubricants....Mac.

Wade,

Your vibration might be from the U
joints being out of "Phase". Be sure the round ends are
parallel to each other at each end of the shaft.

The U joint actually speeds up, and slows down
slightly while rotating due to the shorter, and longer
radius that it swings on, while articulating. I learned
this the hard way.

I put a driveshaft together
once that was out of phase, and it shook, and vibrated
something crazy. I wasn't sure what the problem was, and
tried beefing up the motor mounts & cross member, and
put in a new carrier bearing. This was in a 63
Impala. The driveshaft tried beating itself to death
against the frame near where the shaft goes thru. Someone
smarter than me came along, and showed me what my problem
was. One hour later, no vibration.

my 3
cents
Mike
