Can you email me or post what set up you have
under your car susp wise? What gears, etc. How big a
cam and what heads are you runing on the 406? I am
fixing to build a 406 at end of the summer and am trying
to make sure i have right combo, may as well go with
a known one. Also, I am runing the stock 4 link and
cant get the 60' under 2.0 seconds that is why i want
to know on the susp. Thanks, Bill

Hey Bill

I think this message is to me.

vega_74_406

I just got done talking to Aleck in the HBody
club
about the same thing. I hate to tell you this, but my
car is also running a stock 4 link with the help of
bolt on ladder bars. To date the best is 11.86 at
114.82 with a 60 foot of 1.82. I feel the car has more
in it.. I moved from Denver to Austin TX in the past
year and have got to run the car only twice. I timed
the car by ear and put the biggest holley jets i had
in the carb. I never really got a good stall out of
the converter and let up just a little towards the
end of the quarter.. I think the car will go 11.5. As
for more info... Victor Jr intake, 830 holley carb,
Lunati solid around 570 intake and 555 exhaust with 1.6
roller rockers, 120 dome TRW pistons, stock bottom end
two bolt. I do have main and head studs. tranny is a
stock turbo 400 with a Houghs converter that stalls
around 3000-3500 rpm.
Heads are Dart 2 sportmans,
ported and polished by me. I know that im not a
professional engine or car builder but i have built my share
of small blocks and i love the 406. But hate the
cooling or lack of cooling. Its really hard to drive on
the street. I have a 9 inch rear with 411's with a
mini spool, 28 spline. Tires are a very old set of
M@H's 14 inch.. Im to the point of doing a back-half. I
have a 14 point alston cage and trying to save up the
$$ for the rest...

Hope this
helps

Doug;

Try a Powerglide with a turbo shaft (cost around $100.00). Their lighter & take appox. 35 less Horsepower to turn.

Just a thought.

Thought about that about a year ago....

i
really like the idea of a powerglide since the car has
almost become a strip only car.

what types of
gear ratio would be good???

Ive got 411's now.
The car red lines around 6500 to 6700 about 200 feet
short of the quarter mile mark. To make things more
difficulte i have a big shot of nitrous that i plan on
running in the future. Ive run the kit with smaller jets
out of a super power shot system 75,125,150 hp jets
and it worked great.. when the time comes to get
really serious on the back-half i will have LOTS of
questions....

Hey Bill. Sound great. The next Vega i do will be
a wagon. While going to college in Greeley (CO) I
had a buddy that had a 72 wagon with a 350. I got
lots of my parts from him. I wanted to go to a big
block, until i got the #'s out of the 400 this year. I
feel that the car will go low 11's and with the juice
easy low 10's. So for me ( if you can keep it cool or
if you dont plan on driving it too much on the
street) i would go with the small block. Less weight same
cubes. let me know how or if you plan on building
(buying) a rear frame. Im torn from buinding or buying
one.
