The 2004R has what is communally termed a
"multi-case". Meaning it has a bellhousing configured for both
Chevrolet as well as the "Buick/Olds/Pontiac". This dual
pattern could cause firewall clearance problems if yours
hasn't been "relieved" enough. If you'll be mainly
driving it on the street then the overdrive would be a
benefit. If it's mainly a strip car keep this in mind: the
2004R is a weaker unit than a 350. Also the proper
throttle cable adjustment is critical on 2004Rs. It has no
vacuum modulator; the cable does it all. The overall
length is the same as a 350 but the mount is farther
back on the case. If a proper speedo is important to
you the 2004R has no removable tailhousing meaning
you can't change the speedo drive gear without
dissembling the entire unit. You may or may not be able to
get it right by swapping the driven gears.
