Thinking on converting to rack and pinion. Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

rack and pinion

I have been thinking of this very same thing for
awhile. The rack should be mounted were the center link
now sits. This hoever doesn't make it easy to attach
it to the steering col. To me it looks like someone
would have to drill a hole in the frame right under the
drivers side motor mount to get the steering shaft thru.
Or could tilt the rack input shaft toward the front
of the vehicle and literally do a 180 w/ the
steering shaft. I don't think that mounting the rack more
foreward would be better, it would complicate the bump
steer issue. I know that they make bump steer kits
but...

Another thing you would have to find a
rack out of a car w/ about the same track with(thats
dependable!!!-NOAMC CRAP) Not to bash amc, but the inner tie rod ends
on those racks seem loose from 3 day after they are
installed!

I think that the main problem would bee
where/how to route the steering shafts. I know that
flexable shafts are made(sim. to speedo cables)but I've
never tried/seen these in action.
I hope this
helps.

Jegs makes an original Jegster front end kit for
a Vega/Monza that utilizes a rack and pinion. It's
54.5" wide at the hubs, 40" at the firewall and fits
compact size front ends such as the Vega, Monza, or
Corvette. It is made to utilize readily available
Vega/Monza suspension components, but uses a Pinto or
Wilwood rack and pinion. It also notes that it works with
off-the-shelf headers, and deep sump pans, not to mention it'll
take 200lbs off the front of your car!

Part#
550-910001
Price: $494.99

Another useful kit that you may
need to utilize in this swap is the rack & pinion
adaptor kit. It consists of rack & pinion extensions, rod
ends, bolts, jam nuts and spacers.

Part#
550-40201 (Vega/Monza w/ Pinto Rack)
Part# 550-40230
(Vega/Monza w/ Wilwood Rack)
Price for each:
$83.99

Hope this helps...

Ken
