Manual or Automatic????

I've been thinking (alot) if I should stay with
the TH350 (factory)or go to manual. I've checked on
the Richmond 5 and 6 speed. Tho a bit pricey. Again
just thoughts to get worked out for the future.
Reminder this is a touring sedan with some.... you know.
Thanks Jim

Definantly go with an automatic and a stall
converter. I have had manual trans vehicles before and never
carried for them. Automatics are racing for dumbies. You
just mash the gas and manually shift leaving the gas
pedal floored the entire time.

Manual or Automatic????

Jim,

You say that you want a touring car,
not a drag racing car. When I hear that, I hear "Fun
to drive " and roadworthy for daily driving. While I
would agree that an automatic is "racing for dummies",
I don't agree that they are as fun to drive (which,
by the way, is an opinion).

Just to set the
stage, I have 2 different h-bodies. One is a 350 with a
TH350 behind it. It's a great driver car and is easy to
get around. It's simple and fun to drive. My other
car (in process now) is a 327 with a Nash (now
Richmond) 5-speed behind it. This is the one that will be
more fun to drive and will DEFINITELY see more
spirited driving time.

For a touring/road car, it
is very reasonable to put in a manual transmission.
However, I would agree that an auto would be better for
something that sees more dragstrip service.

You
have to ask yourself what kind of driving you will be
doing more and whether you like shifting a lot. And if
you think it will be an every day car that sees rush
hour, maybe an auto is better. If it's a touring car
that you take out and *drive*, then I would rather
have a manual. It's all preference....

Hope
this helps.

Joe

I have driven standards and I do have a lightning
shift. I have an automatic with a shift kit for manual
shifting. Standard transmission ARE more fun to drive and
get better gas mileage. The car is to be a daily
driver yet ready for the mountain roads. No use in
having a touring car and not tour. I'm real strong at
going for the 5-speed behind the 400 small block. Jim

Let me see, a 400 and a 5 speed in a monza, yeah,
that's got my vote!! Sounds like a lot of fun. I have a
350 and a 4 speed in mine and I enjoy that combo but
like others have said, they both have there advantages
and disadvantages. One thought is that putting a
manual trans in will not put any more strain on the
already taxed cooling system, especially with a larger
motor like a 400. Although a manual trans probably will
put more of a strain on the rest of the driveline.
Obviously you will have to have a good clutch setup to go
along with all that torque. Are you useing the stock
rearend? Like I said, pro's and con's. It's all a matter
of preference. Clyde
