TH200R4 Swap

Anybody out there ever swap in a TH200R4 into an
H-Body? Seriously considering this trans behind a mild
350 (200-250 hp). Wondering about torque arm mount
(bracket attatched to crossmember?) and crossmember. I
have a TH350 crossmember-what mods are needed? Also
anyone know if this trans or even the TH700R4 came with
different gear ratios. I like the 200 due to its 2.74 1st
gear, since I will be running a 2.29:1 posi. I would
like a better FDR than 6.27. This will be a daily
driver/highway cruiser, and (probably!) will never see drag
strip action. Thanx for everones help on this and my
other postings, will keep updating.

TH200R4 Swap

Postby h-bot » Wed Sep 13, 2000 10:59 am

Ian,

I am SO glad you mentioned this. i
have been considering the same swap myself. I have a
350 turbo behind a mild 350, and i too wanted an
extra gear. However, my rear is a 3.23 gear. That would
give me a good holeshot, but I really need the OD to
let me go places with the car. I love to drive it. I
just need the distance.

As I understand it,
physically it should fit, but it IS longer. There MIGHT be a
torque arm tailshaft that fits it, but not sure.

If anyone has details about this or know what some
of the interchanges and dimensions are, please post!
I am interested in doing this and would love to
know if it's feasible before I do it.

Also, I
have a B&M starshifter (I think that's the model) in
my car now. Any good ones that work with the 200 OD
trans?

Joe

TH200R4 Swap

I'm sure the tourque arm can be modified to fit
and as for the drive shaft it also can be shortened
the only question is are you willing to take the job
on? Don't forget the shifter will probably have to be
changed as well. The turbo is a stronger tranny so do
your homework!

TH200R4 Swap

- No problem modifying the driveshaft. Have to do
that anyway, due to the rear end change.
- No
problem with the torque arm as it has to be either
modified, fabricated, or purchased due to the rear end
change.
- I assumed the shifter had to be changed.
Wondering if anyone has/knows what will work.
- Given
that the Turbo is stronger, can't the 2004R be made to
work and be stronger? Isn't this the tranny used in
the GNX's? TCI sells one. What do they do to make it
stronger? How much can a 200 be made to take? This is not a
500 horse fire breathing drag monster, but rather a
moderate 250-300 horse (eventually) street car with good
traction and gears.

Thanks for the input!!! Any
more?

TH200R4 Swap

I have seen 700r4 tranny's that "advertise" that
they can hold up to 400 hp no nos so I would guess
because I'm not a tranny man that the 200 is weaker Have
you thought about a five speed out of a 80's model
camaro or something similar? think what a blast that
would be in the little car with 250-300 hp!!! The
modifications may be a little more labor intesive but much
cheaper considering what it will cost to make a 200
perform lock-up stall converter hardened input shaft
etc.......

TH200R4 Swap

Trentec:

I am in the same spot as you: I
hear that stuff is advertised to do things, but I
don't have any proof or know anyone that knows for
certain, experience or otherwise.

As far as the
5-speed, that is for the other Monza (roller 327 with Nash
5-speed). This one is an auto car and i wanna keep it that
way. I agree that the stick is a blast, but I wan't
one of each. As for the hookups to get the 200 to
work, there is a kit that controls the lock-up
converter, and I would plan to have the hardened input shaft
and such done before install.

I hear what you
are saying, really I do. But, I will keep an auto in
this car. Question is out there as to the feasability
of an OD swap.

Thanks!!

Joe

I read a while back about a 200 behind a
ZZ430
in an Hbody with no problems. I dont remember who it
was.
I know someone with a Buick T-Type and
he
has no complaints with the 200 and the car is

pretty fast and obviosly heavier. I plan on
a 200 for
my Monza but I removed the torque
arm and
developed a light four link style
suspension to hold an
86 S-10 rear so that
eliminates that problem for
me. I hope to
hear of someone elses venture first

TH200R4 Swap

Hi guys, the 200 R-4 is the same length as a
TH350. Also uses the same input yolk. I have two of them
just waiting for my Monza. The 200 uses the TH400
mount location. The most important thing about the 200
is the TV cable, It must be mounted right or say
goodbye to the tranny.
As for build up, check out
Level 10 Overdrive transmissions Installations, 188
route 94 north Hamburg,NJ 07419.
Tel-973-827-1000.
These guys build 200R-4's with 450hp capabilities, And
thats in 60's muscle cars (GTO's,442's,GS' With big
blocks).
As for shifters I'm using a B&M mega shifteron my
350 but it has a OD position.
Good luck.
T.D.

TH200R4 Swap

Postby h-bot » Wed Sep 13, 2000 11:37 pm

From: denisst78_REMOVE_663830_THIS_@yahoo.com

I have a Th-700 in my spyder
i used the tail
housing ofthe th-350
so mounting the torque arm was
very easy
(cut the torque arm)

First gear
ratio of the th-700 is 3.16
so it`seven lower then
the th-200r4

BTW,
the th-700 is a
sturdier trans then the 200r4
so upgrading it is
easier

I made the stock shifter work whit the 4
gears
and i also made a gate so i can`t miss a
shift
i aslo had to make a new crossmember (more to

the rear)

So far the install is
simple,
might need a few bangs whit a hammer to clearance
the floor pan bit

TH200R4 Swap

<<snip>>I read a while back about a

The gentleman you are referring to is Larry Heagren
Sr. (vega_man_larry@yahoo.com) And yes, he has the
ultra-rare ZZ430 motor in his Vega backed up by a 200R4. He
reports that it fits much easier than a 700R4 (no banging
required) and is durable enough to withstand the higher
horsepower engines. So far he's had his motor in his car
since January and has even taken the car some distance
on the Hot Rod Power Tour with no tranny problems
(and he gladly admits to dusting a few Musclecars on
the route, so it got "used and abused"!). Pretty good
proof that the 200R4 is sound if you ask me.

Ok, my real question is what style of crossmember
should get used. I don't like the one that came with the
motor plate kit. I saw a pic of the TH400 x-member from
Kenn-Bell and it looks durable
Any words on this
guys?

<<<BTW Joe, what kind of rear end wil

Denis,

The rear
axle is an 8.5 F-body disc brake rear end. Mounts are
all adjusted to use stock locations. It is a 3.23
posi, so the even lower 3.1 first gear of the 700
really wouldn't be necessary (although I suppose it
wouldnt' hurt).

TH200R4 Swap

Postby h-bot » Thu Sep 14, 2000 3:30 pm

From: ian_mccrimmon_REMOVE_849281_THIS_@yahoo.com

Guys, the reasoning behind the 200R4 is twofold:
availability-good luck finding a 700R4 in the boneyard (just being
Scotch-I can occasionally find a boneyard with $40-$50
tranny specials, compared to $350+ for used.) and the
size similarities with the TH350. Both the 200 and the
350 are (from what I read) 27 3/4" in length and use
the same 27 spline output shaft. The sticking points
will be trans mount point; the 200R4 is in the same
spot as the TH400, 26 13/16" from the bellhousing;
also the torque arm mounting, as the 200R4 does not
have a tailshaft. Anyone custom fab a
crossmember/torque arm mount? The torque arm doesn't need to be
attatched to the trans, does it? One last question-how
about swapping in the 200R4 into a stock Vega?
