Help with brakes.

Do the rear brakes on a 74 Astre self adjust or
do I have to adjust them manually.
The brake
pedal goes almost to the floor before I start to feel
any pressure but if I put the parking brake on a
couple of clicks the pedal feels fairly
solid.

Would this be bad adjustment or air in the
brakes???

Thanx

Paul

The adjustment on the rear brakes will make a
difference in pedal travel and in how the brakes feel. The
rear brakes on these cars, if I am correct, do not
self adjust like other cars that adjust when you apply
the brakes in reverse. The way that these are
supposed to adjust is by using the hand brake, every time
you pull up on it, it is supposed to "adjust". But
that may not be happening depending on the condition
of the brake parts, the star wheel and associated
linkage in the brakes. Take it apart and check the
adjustment, you could also need to bleed the brakes, you may
have some air in the system. These would be the first
two places to check for a low pedal. Clyde
