The easiest way to do this swap is to use the
Monza/Sunbird/Skyhawk 7.5" 10 Bolt Differential. If you have a V8
Monza, you will already have one of these. You can
narrow an S-10 or Camaro Differential, but it gets very
expensive.
When we discuss anything relating to the
S-10/S-15 truck, remember, we are talking about 2 wheel
drive only. Nothing from a 4X4 will work for
you.
The S-10 axles came in (2) variations. 1982-1987
had 26 spline axles. 1988-up had 28 spline axles. If
you are using the stock Monza differential, use the
26 spline axles. If you are installing a 28 spline
carrier, be sure to use 28 spline axles.
Basically, the S-10 axles slip right into the Monza
Differential without any modification. They are 1/16" shorter
than the stock axle and sometimes you must have a
machinist cut a spot face on the inside of the brake drum
to give the added clearance. This can be done on a
drum lathe.
I prefer to use the GM Aluminum
Brake Drum (#1255496) found on GM 'F' and 'G' body cars
through the 1980's. These usually don't require any
modification whatsoever.
That's all there is to the
rear axle swap. The only real pitfall to be aware of
is knowing the correct spline count of your carrier.
In my car, I am using a 1986 Trans Am 3.23
Positraction Unit, so I need 26 spline axles. A 1988-up
carrier would require 28 spline axles.
I hope
