Actually robert since we may glom the crank and
rods out of the 307 block for the 350 block( 331) to
go into the monza,I was thinking about sticking the
crank out of the 283 in the 307 block(302?) for the
vega wagon.Isnt that sick??!!!!!:):):):):):)Bill

307's are just a large journal 283 block. The 307
has a 3.875" bore. If you put a 3.00" stroke 283
crank in there, you will just have a 283.

You
need a set of the conversion bearings to put a 283
crank in a 327 or 350 block to make a 302.

The
older 283 truck blocks (Casting #519) could be bored
.125" oversize. Several companies used to make .125"
over pistons for the 283!

Give me a cal when
you are ready to swap the engine in your
Monzabird...Robert

Hey bill! You probably already know this but you
can also use the small journal 327 block. And put a
283 crank in it to reach your crazy goal :-) Like I
say though 'If your not a little scared then your not
going as fast as you could!'I know a wicked 383 set up
if your interested and it is pretty awesome for the
money. Not to mention the gut wrenching head snapping
torque.Scarey real scarey

The weather here is finally showing some signs of
easing up.The main thing Im trying to accomplish is to
utilize parts that I basically have laying around.I have
2-283 long blocks,1-307 long block,1-1968 327 block
small journal(with main caps)only,1-1968-350 4bolt main
block(and main caps)only. From this pile,Id like to end up
with 2 half way decent engines. The most important one
at this point being for the 80 Monza.I need a driver
car!!!!!I enjoyed our bench racing session talking about
the 331 inch sbc build up Robert.I also have access
to 2 additional cranks,1-large journal 327 cast iron
crank, and a 283 steel crank in addition to the above
blocks.Theres a pile of sbc heads as well.I will get casting
numbers around this week from them.Whatever we build it
must be extremely low buck!!!!!!!Im open to
ideas:
:):):):):)Thanks guys! Bill

Go with the 307. Do a basic rebuild and add one of the Summit House-Brand Cam & Lifter Kits. Then, once the car is going, build a 331 by putting the 327 crank in the 350 block...Robert

Yes it will. I usually don't rebalance. I weigh
the stock parts and put heavy rods with light
pistons. Then, I put the heaviest piston/rod assemblies
towards the flywheel.

This is a Mercedes-Benz
procuedure on all their engines...Robert
