I know that you have ford engine building
exp.
I have a 429 that i have redone the bottom end,
my
problem is oil delivery to the top end. I have 60+
psi
when cold and about 50+ when warmed up. but not much
oil volume coming out of the push rods. one doesn't
have anything coming up. pushrods are clear. what do
you think? bad cam and lifters?
plugged oil
galley? any help would be great. thank you in
advance.
John

That is very good pressure on a '385 series'
engine. Is there a lot of sludge buildup in the motor? If
not, you may find the reduction in oiling is from worn
push rod seats.

My 429's oiled almost too well
and that was with restrictors in the main bearing
saddles. I would put a set of screw in studs in there and
some big block Chevrolet rocker arms. It is a bolt on
swap on early heads.

Get back to me on
this...Robert

Robert, there was a fare amount of sludge under
the valve covers. Can i do anything other than have
it hot tanked. I would really like to avoid
a
full tear down. Any suggestions would be
great.

Well, there isn't too much you can do without
tearing it down. You could pull the intake and vacuum up
as much of the sludge as possible. That would help
and I have done it on some used cars to get them by
for a few more miles.

You could pull the
lifters and run the oil pump by hand and let the flow of
oil through the galleys push out whatever might be in
there.

It might not hurt to throw in some new lifters
while you are at it, but a lot of what I am saying
depends on what you want from the car.

if you
want to improve oiling as a 'band aid,' then clean it
up and perhaps run some engine flush through it.
However, if you want it to be 'right,' then the only way
is a complete teardown.

I hope this
information is helpful...Robert (BigBadVooDooVega@aol.com)
