Upgraded the board today, made a few changes - no more spam!

Postby ColinOpseth » Sat Nov 04, 2006 2:56 pm

Hey guys,
I installed a fairly significant security patch today. As such, there may be a few little typos I may have made. If you find the board doing weird things let me know.

As well, I think I may have nailed the spam registrations. I now require new users to put their vehicle into their profile. While it won't show up in the profile (it's superceded by the garage mod) it will prevent spam bots from registering.

I also installed a couple of minor spam reducers. They're transparent and should give you all no issues ;)

Later,
Colin

No problem,
I just finished simplifying the registration process. Since most bots register using scripts I now require a new field called "Vehicle Year" to be filled. If the new user doesn't fill the field he doesn't get reigstered.

I also added a new thing called "registration hash." Basically, instead of being able to submit the page with the URL command "agreed=true" you now have to submit the page with the registration hash that the script provides, such as: agree=34d93jd2kdng300s82.

Both of these features should kill 99.9% of bot registrations.
Later,
Colin

So damn nice to see moderators that are visible and present and go to great lengths to continually monitor and improve the forum ... we saw absolutely NONE of this on V8monza. Thanks Colin and Dennis!

As for the question posed, and a good one at that. maybe you could just put a message under that part of the registration outlining the need for this, and ask new users to use the year of an H-Body they used to own, or one they would 'like' to own, if they had to chose.

Well, members that have already registered aren't affected (Colin can correct me).

Second, I'd say new members w/o a h-body can list the one they want.

The whole point is to make sure someone isn't just registering on every board they find in order to SPAM. A question like this is to foil an automatic spambot because the normal phpBB registration doesn't ask the question and so the spambot's script doesn't work.

A couple of days and no new spammers so it looks like Colin's changes are working!
