What's been going on with the site? I have run into several instances over the last couple of weeks where the site is not available. It seems to be getting worse. Today it has not been available most of the day.

I have no idea, to be honest. It may be host-related.

The site's on a shared host. If someone else's site kills the server, we're all affected. The host has been pretty good about keeping it running but lately I've noticed a little more downtime.

The only long-term solution is to go to a semi-dedicated or dedicated host, but that's big bucks. That would cost $360 to $800/year depending on the provider and plan. And for that, the site would be exactly the same, except without the occasional downtime (supposedly).

I know several guys have offered financial support, and I appreciate it, but here's my problem.

Say I sign up with a host. Some of the enthusiastic guys will chip in a few bucks and maybe we'll cover the first few months.

After that, I would bet that most (not all) guys who already chipped in won't want to give any more. Remember, the board would be the same; I don't currently have anything extra to offer. A few die-hards will keep up the support but not at a level to pay the higher bills. Guys who never intended to pay in the first place won't start paying then.

So, that would leave me paying a lot more for a site that would be pretty much the same as it is now, just with less downtime.

I've given this a LOT of thought, but if anyone has any other ideas to throw out, go ahead!

I know there will be people who cannot afford to but there must be 40 regulars here who could each afford to throw in 20 bucks a year to have this site running at its best all the time. I know I certainly would.

I guess it gets back to the HBOA, maybe somehow they could be tied together?

I'm going to contact Verizon regarding a dedicated sDSL connection. If it's possible I can host the site. I have a spare computer that runs unix. That's something Dennis and I will have to coordinate.

Dennis and Colin,

I'm ok with it, since I now understand what is/may be going on. I also know that I would gladly pay $20 per year to go with a better plan if thats what we decide to do.

I'm try hard to be easy going, and it helps me when I understand what is going on.

I can't thank you guys enough for doing what you do!!
