Google Search function

Postby fyrftr50 » Fri Nov 02, 2007 5:51 pm

The search function for finding old posts doesn't seem to be working all that well. I typed in "Road Hawk" and came up with nothing, even "Monza" only came up with 4, yes 4 items, lol.

It's a trick!

Google shows you 3-4 results, THEN a stupid group of 3-4 ads disguised as links, THEN the rest of the results. I just searched for "Monza" and got 73 pages of results (just from our forums of course).

"Road Hawk" (in quotes) got me 4 pages of results from our forums and no stupid ads.

If you're not seeing that, maybe Google was having a hiccup or something.

I've actually been pretty impressed with Google lately. They index things fairly quickly now. I've been on a couple of forums where I see something new to me on a post made THAT DAY, go to Google it, and the first result IS that very forum post!

It would be nice to have a better search engine where you could select the forum you wanted to search. I know I've tried to search topics that i know have been discussed and came up empty. For example "camonza" gets one response. I know that word was entered more than that. And I seem to remember discussing the Vista Vent sunroof but searching "vistavent" or "vista vent" brings up nothing.

Dennis
Thanks, I guess it was a hiccup, since it seems to be working just fine now.

I love google, lol, but for my own selfish reasons ... My websites are usually the first ones listed in a search of certain items.

Yeah, but look at what you get when you search "monza". The first page is all 2001-2002 from the old yahoo! clubs. page 2 has one recent post, then 8 links to the garage (mldeolde's latest update link?) . page 3 all mldeolde's garage update. page 4 back to old yahoo post except one recent. That's what I get out of the search. What do you guys get?

Here's another example: Right now as I type this, the first non-sticky thread in the general forum is "Even cooler wheels !!!!!" In that thread you can find the word "Vectors" three times. If you use the search function for "Vectors" you get one thread from May of this year. So how many other instances is the word "Vectors" being missed?

Your absolutely right, I tried the sam thing and couldn't get new or newer posts to come up on the search engine. Just curious, what is the problem with getting a search function for the board (ie: the reason we're using google till "what" happens?)

Searching puts a big strain on the server. That's why most boards won't let you perform multiple searches without waiting in between, and some won't let you search unless you're a member, etc.

When we got kicked off the last host for using too many resources, the most likely culprit was search, so I disabled it--let Google to the heavy-lifting.

We haven't had any big problems since then, so I'm reluctant to turn it back on, and I haven't found any "low impact" ways to do a search (that's the "what" that didn't happen).

What will it take to turn it back on? A new server? Financial support from members? I've been reluctant to bring this topic up because I figured it was just adding to the workload for somebody. But now that Bryan got it started I'd like to see if we can get it resolved. That "Bob Gumm moved" thread got me curious enough to go check out his forum. I found this quote from Bryan coincidently:
---------
" why?
This is my first post here in months (and probably my last for months, lol), and the first visit in months as well. Why bother, every post made now permanently deletes a past post. As of now, everything before June 6, 06 is GONE!!! A lot of good, useful and hard-to-find info is no longer retreivable (but then again, searching for anything in here is equally impossible anyways)!!! Gotta love that in a forum! Sorry for rant, just the way it is!"
----------

A lot of good hard to find info is not retrievable here either. ( OK, that's hitting below the belt, sorry)

Roger, not intentionally trying to shift the focus, but that's a classic internet problem--searching, how to search, better ways than using textual terms, etc. If we had our "own" search turned back on it would catch a few more posts (depending on how often we re-index which is again a resources issue) but still it's a keyword-based search and a pretty braindead one at that.

Still, keep trying Google. If you search for "Google search", THIS topic comes up! There are search options we can consider, like trying to limit forum titles and so on, if someone has time to play with that.

I still plan to wiki-ize the FAQ as a first attempt to get "canonical" information into one place, and have it editable and extendable by the users. When I get the time...

Dennis,
For testing I'd setup a phpBB-based wiki that was user-editable. I don't know if you remember seeing that.

Anyway, that's off-topic. I don't think the members here would be interested in fronting about $150 a month for a co-located box.
