Computer problem

Postby spyderman1977 » Sat May 26, 2007 7:27 pm

I bought a Compaq computer a couple of years ago and bought just the tower from Circuit City. Then about 2 months after I brought it home I heard a loud POP come from the tower. It shut down instantly and never to come back on. Well I was told that the power supply had went out. Sooooo I take the computer apart since I know several people that have said that its pretty easy to swap out.

By the way when I took the computer back to Circuit City for Warranty work they took the tower in and called me about 3 weeks later to tell me there was a bug infestation and that the warranty was void on the spot. Also just to add fuel to the fire there was a game in the CD drive when it quit. I told the person at the counter about the game and they said I should get it back with the Computer. So when I come off of cloud nine about the infestation that was not true I go and pick up the tower. The front cover is busted and the DVD door is broke and hanging loose. I asked what the deal was with the busted cover and I got no where and they said it must have happend during shipping which they did not do because of the bug story.

OK now that we are up to date I just recently decide to dig out the compaq and see if I can fix it. I take the cover off and see that the cover was busted because some MORON at Circuit City tried to get the game out of the cd drive........I still move on past that and take out the Power Supply and go pick up a new one. I get home and fix the cover somewhat and install the new power supply.

Well after hooking everything back up I turn on the power supply and turn on the switch up front and finally life breaths back into the computer. All the fans turn on an so forth but there is no signal to the monitor. I think the monitor is a bust so I hook it up to a different computer that I know is working and the monitor works fine. I hook it back up to the Compaq that was screwed up and still nothing from the tower.

Is there something I have missed or is this tower basically junk now? Is there some way to check and see if the mother board is any good ?

I hope I didnt waste 40 bucks on a power supply for nothing :(

Make sure all the plugs have been connected inside the tower. Could be something simple. You may also want to reseat all the coonectors and make sure nothing is loose.

I have an older comp that i took the cover off and compared plugs too. I got everything plugged in that needs to be plugged. At first I had missed one plug but shut it off..plugged it back in and tried once more...Still no signal to the monitor.

Most likely the culprit - if it has a video card. Most motherboards have a built-in graphics chip. You may see another VGA 'outlet' on the back of the computer somewhere. If so, hook up your monitor and see what happens.
If you were gaming it, then you probably have a video card and it blew out when the power supply went bad.

Yes all the fans do start up on the computer. The CPU fan comes on as well as a second fan at the back of the tower. The DVD and CD drives open and all but thats all that works.

I havent checked to see if there might be another spot to plug the monitor in yet but will probably later this evening.

As far as beeps or anything I dont remember there being any noises when it started up. Its been a while since I had the computer on so it might have beeped on start up. So right now there is nothing.

I chased down a guy at work that messes around with computers and he wants to check it out for me for free so thats the route I am going to go. He thinks it might be the mother board that took a dump when the PS went out. Hopefully thats all that is wrong although if the Video card quit it might be a toss up which would be cheaper to replace. I really dont want to have to go buy another computer :( although I would like to try to possibly build a gaming computer some day.

I will post back once this guy checks the computer and let you know what he finds out is wrong with it.

Thanks again,
Paul

I think that you're Motherboard is dead because of an electrical shock when your supply unit died... :?
