Big Brother will crush your car!

Postby zeke » Mon Jun 25, 2007 10:50 am

I read this in the local paper this morning and thought to myself - hmmm, that's a humongus gray area there.

A couple guys were racing on a major highway here recently and caused a multiple car collision. A trucker that swerved to miss the pile-up was killed. The racers were arrested and face a bail hearing this morning. So the Attorney General's remarks below are probably just posturing. Scary stuff tho eh?

Ontario moves to seize cars juiced up for street racing

The government has the power to seize and destroy cars that have been adapted for street racing, and can do so before a race takes place or any charges are laid, Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant said yesterday.

Car junkies who pour thousands of dallars into their vehicles to make them as fast as possible are wasting their money, Bryant said.

He warned potential racers that all it takes is a tip from police to seize and destroy their cars.

"If we can establish someone has parts and they're juicing up their car - obviously for the purpose of street raccing - then we can seize those vehicles," Bryant said.

"We will seize it and you will never see it again. We will crush your car, we will crush the parts."

Ok, I see the difference. At least the guys in Cali were given due process (for what that's worth).

Looks like they're proposing to crush your car if it has any mods and they feel like it? Ugh.

According to that article monzamess, those guys were racing and/or had stolen parts. Also says that police have to obtain a court order to do it.

That makes more sense than what our AG is suggesting.

The scary thing is how many HP haters are actually out there.

Thank God for SEMAhttp://www.sema.org/Main/StartPage.aspx. And the fact that the vehicle accessory industry is Big Business. If not a billion dollar industry.

If its stolen than yes...it should be taken from you.

but thats just plain wrong, I would never endanger myself or others for the sake of a street race, but If they ever infringe on my hobby car that is my American right to have, and spend my hard earned TAXED paycheck on, I will defend her like mad max...to the death.

Its not just about the car...after all the car is just a thing, but my rights are more than that. I have no stolen parts on my car (that i know of) and it is a car that "should" have been crushed long ago but I love it and its my project...no one should be able to take your stuff.

a VIN that "fell off" is indeed cause for curiosity, but without proof, they have no case and should not be able to touch those cars. Now if caught in the act, thatn by all means....go ahead and crush em....if I ever get caught doing 160 MPH on a public street than please crush my car with me in it...cause thats just stupid.

God bless

Hmmm, what about all the cars that come from the factory "juiced up" stock? Are all new camaros, mustangs, vipers etc be crushed as well? Or they're ok cuz the factory sold them that way and the government made tax income from the sale? Image

I can't see it standing up in court. Discriminate against me bcuz of my car parts even tho I havn't committed any crime? It is wrong 4 sure!

Modify it all you want but drive like an idiot and endanger others and I agree with this. Keep your demonstrations of speed off the street and away from onlookers. Look what happened with the professional driver in the parade. Car got away from him and killed several onlookers.

Just plain STUPID.

Keep it smart.

Ricers or not - just another over-reaction by government that takes away personal rights.
Street racing is wrong, but big fines can be an effective deterrent, too.

This seems similar to the 'gun-removal' activists who want to destroy guns.

The owners should have at least been able to take the wheels and tires off the car before crushing.

Big brakes help it stop, not go. Money will NOT be spent on big brakes if there is a risk that the whole car could be crushed - the hell with safety, then.
Maybe they should just crush the engine - that's what made it go.
