Wrote a short story tonight.. impressions?

Postby ColinOpseth » Sun Aug 19, 2007 5:57 am

Hey guys,
Well, I've had this urge to just 'write' something since I graduated last March. I've felt bad that I haven't written any kind of prose at all. Tonight I whipped together a story in about 2 hours. Dunno if it's any good but let me know what you think.

I saved it as RTF so you guys can view it by downloading the attachment.

Thanks,
Colin

RTF is Rich Text Font, an international document standard. Sorry you can't view it..
'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

I just found out that the font was Calibra, not Times New Roman. :/ Stupid, Microsoft 2007. It should work now.

Here's a link, http://www.IROC-Z.org/Mika_and_I.rtf

I uploaded a new version that users can download or you can click the link above. It should open in any document reader like Word or Wordpad. Probably even Notepad.

Thanks,
Colin

I wasnt a big fan of the actual content, but it's written well.

As you read it, you quickly become unaware that your reading and a mental picture develops.

I only do that with dean r koontz.

I've not read in quite a while.

My last reads were Neil Pearts books, (Rush Drummer)

Ghost Rider

and Traveling Music.

Good Job. Keep it up.

Next Challenge,
Write a tale from the 70's, or 80's and include a vega.

Colin,

I thought it was well-written.
Even though the reader gets a sense of Mika's ultimate fate early, the decision of the author in the end is surprising. And in first person, too!
One thing I kept asking myself in the beginning was, "What is Mika's relationship to the author?"
Perhaps that could be developed further which would also help to explain the ending. But, then , what do I know? I hated English classes in school.

Thanks for the positive responses, guys. I am a bit rusty as I haven't written in over a year, not to mention that this was basically a one-draft job I wrote from start to finish with only minor corrections.

I don't really like writing in 1st person. This seemed to work OK but I'm going to try rewriting in 3rd person omnicient and see how it turns out.

Marco, thanks for props on the mental picture. Basically, the story is a quick stream of consciousness so maybe that's why the mental picture seems to make sense. My original intent was to write a story beginning with a person in a sinking car that has water starting to run into the floorboards through the vents and the person thinking, "I'm here now. I made my choice and even if I want to change it I am committed to this decision." I've always been intrigued by the choices people make in the final moments of life.

I've been toying with a Vega story. I'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
Colin
