I have a very rare numbered car,the plaque on the dash says #27.From what I Know is it is some type of Sunbird with 400 v8,4speed Muncie tranny, posi rear end ,headers and honey cone 13 inch wheels. The car has louvers on the rear window and the side windows ,special Blachbird decals along the bottom of the car.The seats are in excellent condition as are the louvers and wheels the rest of the car needs total restoration.I have never seen one of these cars in all my years of car collecting this is truly on of a kind.

here is a reference to a 3rd car

http://www.automotiveforums.com/t82794- ... stion.html

on the first page of this thread the 2nd car mentioned is in mass. So your salesman story makes sense. Also, there is a dealer sticker on the spoiler pictured but I can't make out the name.

Most likely this may be a dealer installed option for a certain market. It wasn't uncommon for dealers to do things like this to help spark some interest in certain models. I hardly think it was a factory installed option. Dealer installed or aftermarket ......

Do we know if it's just different side decals and a dash plaque? Or could there be more to the package?

I used to work for a Chevy dealer who would constantly make his "own" versions of the early 90's Camaro's, and other GM vehicles... sometimes he'd even have plaques made. Am guessing this is probably the case here as well, but still very cool find regardless. I can't imagine a dealer making 500 of these though, as they would be lucky to sell 4 or 5 in 1979, so is there some third party outfit similar to BORT involved? If not, perhaps the dealer simply grabbed the number 500 out of a hat, ran with it and made plaques. Interested to see where this leads! Need paperwork! :th:

from what I can tell shaker hood, decals and plaque on a stock 305 formula or spoiler equipped car if spoilers were an option without formula option.

The more we discover and compile here, the more Bryan is going to have to update his website to add a new 'Blackbird' page. That's a problem to have, huh. :th:

A build sheet is now the next quest. Like Clyde, I would be the first one to dismiss the car as a dealer creation...but like ken said, 500 would be a little steep for one dealer.

But thats why I suggest a "Market". That would have included all the dealerships in the Northeast, or New England area, or all the ones under one district manager.

I'd like to think it was a little known factory option, I'm holding a candle for that thought...... but the lack of it appearing in any Pontiac literature strongly suggest's it's some type of post-production, value add-on.

Also... I don't see the "of 500" on this dash plaque... so that's just a rumour still. This makes it more likely it was one dealership's creation.. Hmm
And looking at the condition of the interior (pics in craigslist ad) there may not be a build sheet left..

They were and there are totals of how many were made. If we could get the dealership name off the back then maybe a call could fill in more blanks.

I am up in this area now...sorta... In Newport, RI not that far away and was looking at this ad on craigslist. One thing that gets me is that the ad says it has a 400 CI engine in it. Definitely not stock, espcially in '79. Also, as a couple of others brought up, the car is rough and of VERY questionable origin. I was kinda thinking of going to look at it, but to me that price is more than a little unrealistic for something that there is no real background on, no way it is the stock engine, and in rough shape. If I were to make an offer what do you think is realistic? If I go I will take plenty of pics and see if we can get some more info from it.

Based on the plywood to keep your feet off the road and the way it has been stored, I'm thinking this car is very close to hopelessly rusted out underneath.

John, I would go look at it anyway, and at the very least, get lots of pics of it. See if you can find a buildsheet behind the seat backs too... a few quick screws, and Voila! :D
