Pix of my first car

Postby daan » Sun Jun 16, 2013 12:07 am

When I found the pix of my Sunbirds (and I coulda swore I had more of them...) I found pix of my first car, a 73 Pontiac Ventura II. 350/auto. I traded a guitar for it. It came with several extra wheels, a radiator, and about half a million beer cans. The floor under the front seats were a couple 2X4's holding up the seats, a RXR crossing sign and a washing machine lid. It got me to school and my grocery store job just fine, though. I kept it over the winter and sold it to a guy I worked with who wanted the sub frame and drive train for a hot rod project. I got it to his yard, and he had it cut up and ready for the scrapper in record time. The driver's door was so rusty that I could grab the bottom of the door skin and pull it over the window... I liked it even though it was a total beater, I could park it anywhere and nobody would mess with it, probably because it looked like you'd catch something from it  I remember buying oil by the case and refilling the engine pretty much every time I had to fill the gas. Now that I remember, putting more than $5 (in 1987, so a larger volume than now) the gas would leak out the hole in the tank. I can't imagine letting MY kids drive something like this around, but I remember my parents being glad they didn't have to tote me around or let me use their car anymore. I couldn't park it by the house, though

We had a similar car like that ( 69 Nova 4 door Split Pea green) with rusted out floorboards but the 250 Six ran like a top. Buddy at work had a similar( 70 Nova 4 door GoldYellow) with a 230 Six which had a steel crank and rods from the factory , but he couldn't beat me in drag race down a major road back in Rochester NY. I paid $20 for the Nova and it had been sitting for 9 months, we just jumped the battery cables since it had no battery and it started right up on the second try! :th:

Sorry to say my Nova didn't look as bad as that Ventura, that car of yours looked like it went through the demo derby

Cars were way better built and tougher back in the day................................................................... :th:

I wonder if the half a million beer cans had anything to do with the demo derby look.

I still have my 1st car.

'71 4 door like yours 250 6cyl. mine was a little straighter than yours when I bought mine. After somebody tried to park their Buick inside my car, the left was 2' shorter than the right, that car withstood massive amounts of abuse, cars were a lot tougher then! I will see if I can find some pic's Harry
