I was going to school for the Navy in 66 and met a guy who had a 66 2 door catalina that had a 4 spd and what looked like a gto console. It had a 455 and a q-jet and would pin you in the seat from a dead start. There was a one mile straight road from the base to the town of Glenco Ga,and there were a lot of rubber streaks all along it for about a quarter mile or so.One night we were at the club talking cars and this kid came up and asked if my buddy wold like to have a little race for half a mile. SURE I would my buddy sez,so off we go and line up and go on the third honk of the horn.We left the carmen giha (?) like he was standing still, until we were a bit past the quarter and all of a sudden this kid blasts by us like WE were standing still! WTF? Found out the kid had a full tilt porche (?) turbo(home built) set up in it!! Yah just never know do ya? But that Catalina was one awsum ride!!! Oh yeah...the car was special ordered from the factory with the 4 speed and console and bucket seats, big block 4bbl.My buddy bought it off the original owner who had a lot of debt and needed cash quick. My buddy was in the right place at the right time!! Enjoy your Poncho man!!!

I normally don't nit-pick old car stories; especially since my memory ain't what it used to be and I'm pretty sure some of my own stories contain inaccuracies. But in 1966 the biggest Pontiac motor would have been a 421; available with 3x2 Rochesters or 1(or even 2!) Carter AFB's. The Quadrajet didn't show up on Pontiacs until 1967, and the 455 came out in 1970.
Back then, a lot of the full size cars would surprise with their performance; especially with a 4-speed.

old timer here. i think the pontiac 421 with the 2-4s was last avaliable in 63(maybe 64). think the first year was 62. the 66 i think was available with the 389(maybe 400) with 3-2s. could be wrong. i m a chevy guy, but always watched out for those big bad pontiacs. local guy around here has a 62 or 63 convertible with the 421 and 2-4s. he also shows up with a 65 impala with a real 396(425 horse big block) and he really bought it from and old lady schoolteached in pennsylvania. art

Jeff when you get pulled over and the officer asks "Do you know how fast you were going?" you can answer Yes I Do I have a certified speedometer! Maybe he will be so flabbergasted that he will forget to start writing his novel about your little "wide open adventure" (We Know you would never do that!) Any way you slice it still "Pretty Sweet" Harry

spencerforhire:I stand corrected, went back and checked and yes you are right. It was a 421,4bbl not a 455. It helps to have someone check your 6.

I'm not nearly as smart as I look; most of my info comes from the NHRA Stock Eliminator Classification Guide. Way more trustworthy than Wikipedia or "fan" forums. Great source for settling arguments about what motor was available in what body, advertised HP #'s and what year they made what.

Well I got some work done on the Catalina today, installed the rebuilt Carb, and dropped the fuel Tank to Clean it out, and replace or repair the sender, And I found a Build Sheet!!! I already have the PHS, but it is kinda Kool to see all the info on a Build Sheet, Like all the individual Part Codes, but what the heck does "Fender Piercing" Mean? Possibly what emblem holes are punched in them? Hope the Large Pictures Load. I have never found one outside of an Inerior before, and the condition of this ones confirms to me this is a low Mileage PA Car!

Well I got off my Butt and did a couple of things. I did get the New exhaust manifolds on the car. Had to take the started, and Oil Filter Adaptor off to get the Big Ram Air III Manifolds on the car. But it was a good thing I dropped the Starter, the Starter Solenoid mounting Screws are Missing!!!!! I would never have thought it would work like that! I will post some pics comparing the incorrect 1972 (worst manifolds Pontiac ever made!!!!) and the repo Correct Manifolds of the style a previous owner removed. As you can see they are basicly cast Iron Headers. They flow very well but are also very heavy.
Aslo got good news that Bobs Speedometer Shop rebuilt my fuel sender in a day! and will be ready for pick up on Monday. Now to see about getting the rust cleaned out of the tank. I would never had guessed that part of the Freeway Enforcer package was a Baffled Fuel Tank. So much for my usual back yard clean up method.
