corrosion on circuit boards?

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Sat May 24, 2014 3:49 pm

Anyone eve see brown corrosion on a printed circuit board? Is this something possible? Common to old electronics that have been exposed to moisture?

Specifically my headlight warning chime /black box in my monza. I found it was running hot to the touch, and drained the battery after a day or 2.
I pulled it apart and the only unusual thing I can see is that there seems to be some brown corrosion all over the back of the PCB.

Almost seems like someone spilled coca-cola on it at one time. But that would only have been possible if it was removed at some point. What caused the brown shiny crust?

Marco I have seen the "greeny" copper corrosion on some older e-stuff, I have had some luck with just brushing it off with a tooth brush and a cleaner I don't remember (WD40? maybe "fantastic" or "Brasso") and it could be clear coated for protection afterwards. Give it a shot all you have to lose is a broken piece! YouTube expect a visit from Marco.... Harry

baking soda and water to scrub

brown is usually a plasma discharge caused by component failure. Check for melted pcb parts.
