New cars = problems

Postby dindin » Wed Jun 11, 2014 3:50 pm

I had my 2013 Toyota Tacoma in for a recall and oil change in February, just today I was cleaning my truck and decided to check the oil, I figure it only has 7,800 miles on it and the dealer changed the oil at 5,000, but seems like the oil is 2 inches about the full mark. Seems like the added oil without draining the dirty oil first..I hope this is not gonna cause damage later on, so much for buying a new car and no worries eh.

Don't feel bad, Al. I bought a 1992 S-10 Blazer new, and brought it in for a warranty issue and a "free" first oil change. When we picked it up, we made it about 4 blocks before the engine locked up. The oil change flunky forgot to put the oil in. Naturally, we got a new short block.

Sounds more like:

Somebody else working on my car = problems.

Doesn't sound like in either case the newness of the car was the issue. :D

Oh ya and let us not forget the "Crate" motor scenarios!! :bang: ....you purchase or should I just say, I purchased a new crate motor 'cause I wanted a "NEW" engine
and after we realized that it wasn't up to standard, G.M. decided that warranty would only take place had I "inspected" and tore down the new motor prior to installing it. :? :bang: WTF!!! ...built a motor at a reputable engine builder with their own warranty! Frig You G.M.!

So I call the dealer, explain to them that my dipstick shows a very high level, the dealer questions that they did an oil change cause with synthetic you only need a change every 10,000 miles, I explain my truck is a 4 cylinder that requires every 5,000, anyway she has a service manager call me back, he tells me its "kinda late" why not come in tomorrow,..I call Toyota corporate to document whats going on, (no I don't trust dealers) the woman says it could damage the engine if oil is overfilled get it in ASAP, so on my way home I drive by a different Toyota dealership, I drive to one on the open bays and ask if someone could check my oil level..(yes I felt like a dummie asking for someone to check my oil level)..The mechanic pulls the stick out, hmmm hmmm, I say it looks high don't it, he dips it in a couple times, then suggests we let the car sit for 10 minutes...comes back, again hmmm..I say it looks high doesn't it? his answer well its higher on the side than the other side, but its hard to tell, one side if way up the other looks high by about a half quart, ..I ask, how am I supposed to check my oil??? His reply , let the car sit over night and check in the AM..

So I use my google smarts and see its an issue on Toyota with dipstick readings, but not one person who works at Toyota can tell me this?? So I check in the AM and it still looks high, I have no idea if its high or not..I

So to make a short story long, I still don't know if my oil level is high or not...

Only way to know, is the old adage.... "if you want something done right... do it yourself". Pour in the right amount and re-mark the dipstick.

My Aveo does a similar thing, higher on one side... I'f found spinning the dipstk. in the tube one or two times sort of equalizes the sides.

This can only mean that the dipstick is not going in the pan completely vertical right? and must be on atleast a 45 degree angle so if you turn it over it will still read higher on the top side...having said that, by way of your eye simply guesstimate where the oil would line up in a halfway between area and if it is still above the add line it is still overfilled. Go with your original plan and let the dealership make their decision, cause either way, you touch anything and you'll void warranty even after consulting every dept. Toyo has, they'll still come back on you for screwing with it and it may cause doubt in their minds. Go with your gut instinct and simply have the dealership make that call...if it is deemed that there was an overfilling issue then you have them and they'll have documentation on this and if there is a failure down the road, it's noted and get the service manager to sign his name on the work order and make sure that the "Tech comments" at the top of the work order state
"Found Oil level to be too high" or found Oil level to be at the proper level"....this way it liables them to any outcome. Certainly do nothing physical to the vehicle at this point. Also, for a mechanic to tell you or even suggest to you that the vehicle should "Sit overnight" to assume the proper oil level is totally unheard of! Could you imagine it taking this long to determine the level on a trip somewhere or for the E.M.S. to wait while filling at a gas station??! W.T.F. did they install molasses for oil? sounds like a personal problem with these people and no-one wants to commit to liability. Just get it to the dealer and if there is a possibility of damage resulting to the engine as Toyo suggested, then have it towed there and under no way obligate yourself to voiding the warranty. Hope this helps, Ron.
P.S. you originally said that the oil was 2 inches or so above the add...having said that, I wouldn't drive it and certainly do not tell anyone this because that is double where it probably should read, good luck and let us know, I'm curious how they handle this as a reputable company, and as you are probably well aware, Toyota Motor Corp. is a "Criminal" operating company, as they were recently charged with "Criminal Negligence causing Death" in recent months by the Supreme Court in the U.S.A. :x

Well, I took it to the dealer who did the original oil change and after some head scratching the oil guy decided it was overfilled, again they suggest I wait a while before checking oil, but it seems like the oil level would show low if the engine is just turned off not high,?? Maybe my logic is screwy, but I would think the oil takes time to drain into the pan and would read low on a warm engine not high..

anyway they drained oil and filled to proper level and ran though a FREE car wash...

I think I may just start doing my own Oil changes even though they give me Free 2 year maintence..This is the first time I ever used a car dealer to change my oil, and I feel may be my last..
