MSRacing Conneticut re: Saginaw rebuilds

Postby Sunula66 » Sat Jul 19, 2014 11:14 am

Hi folks,
As I've been trouble shooting in the past while, including calls to Cali. to the "overdrive builders and other various scenarios to help the majority of us here to help solve a lot of problems with gear challenged cars with 13in. wheels and these ailing Saginaw transmissions, I was contacted by my friend in regards to building up the existing transmissions, to wit, the Saginaw that if it's the first gen style, don't have much strength against power. The aforementioned company, M.S. Racing in Conneticut has a website and I wondered if anyone here knew of them or has even used them. My thoughts were to have my second gen. Saggy rebuilt and according to them, they can beef it up substantially as good as a "rock crusher" with square cut gears. I don't want that particular set up but heavier gears, bushings etc. is a great idea! For $650 bucks U.S. funds, they'll ship this tougher than stock rebuild kit to me way up here and It will also be with a gear ratio change of my choice. My M-20 wide ratio Saginaw has a 3:55 first gear in it and it needs to be changed for obvious reasons (thinking 294 or something) I realize that this is still limited to a top end situation but then there are the usual other tricks like rear gears that I got from a Monza guy here, Harry, and these are available around the globe still. So if the money is a bit tight for most of us, get the Saggy uplifted (pun intended) or even do it yourself along with a rear gear change and keep the stock console and 13 in wheels for a while yet, depending how badly you want to keep it close to original! Then some day down the road change to larger wheels and hubs :th: Anyone know these folks in CT.?

They're probably as rare as hen's teeth anymore, but my foggy memory is thinking of one popular mod a loooong time ago was to find an old Saginaw 3-speed with the overdrive unit in the tailshaft housing and install it on the Saginaw 4-speed.

That would definitely solve a lot of headaches Chuck. The ideas from a long time ago still prove to be effective today. Find that stuff and you could have a winner!

What rearend ratio are you running that you need a overdrive? With the Saginaws' available first gear ratios you can run a fairly low numerical rear gear and have pretty good performance. It's just a matter of how you juggle the trans ratios and the rear ratio. For example, I have the stock V8 Saginaw in my car which came with the 3.11 first gear, when you couple this with the 2.56 rearend gear it gives the combination of good accelleration (especially with a 355 V8) and low highway rpm's.

Hi Clyde,
exactly and I got rear gears from Harry and I think they were 2:56 as well....what RPM's are you turning with your Monza at 60 MPH ? I think with the horse power and once larger diameter wheels are installed, they will still be alright and I'll keep my stock gears (293's) which right now my car at 60 is sitting around 2650 RPM..( 1st gear being too low...

PSS..I think Harry still has a couple of rear ends that may have good gear sets, Harry?...or did you sell'em already...

Ron, They have been committed to someone else, (sale pending) the one set of 2.56 are toast (with or with out anti-seize Ron  ) and you have the other one, the 2.92 is in one that is spoken for, and that is all but the one in my car. Thanx Harry
