Poison Sumac...

Anyone know what this plant looks like? I did some google research and I'm 99% sure there's a giant PS bush growing right outside my storage area. Havent touched in fortunately. It's real ominous looking. Thick Red stalks. Really seemed out of place and that got me to do some research on it. I'll get some pics next time I'm there.

Anyone ever seen one? This one has thick red/maroon stalks and branches. Berries too.

Looking at the google images..... your description sounds spot on.

I'd steer clear of that sucka if it has 3 leaves on the end and twin leaves opposite each other all down the spine.........

Having never been sensitized to those "poison" plants as a child, I could hold them and play in them and never break out. So I never really learned to avoid them. Real lucky...... up until about 10 years ago. Got some itchy rash on my ankle one summer. It was AWFUL. Apparently, during the night, I'd scratch it on the sheets. In the morning, my ankle would be stuck to the sheets from the dried fluid and blood.

Now, I'm careful of any plant/vine that has 3 leaves on the end.
And for anyone that doesn't know, it's not the plant that's poisonous. It's the fluid/oil inside the plant. There are samples of the oil in the Smithsonian over 100 years old that are still active. If your dog touches it, and you touch the oil 3 days later...... you still get it. Same goes for yard/lawn tools that may have contacted it the previous season..... Be careful.

I was just thinking... the back of the spyder butt's up to the branches as I back it out of storage.

What got my attention about it, is that the plant wasn't there the last few years. This year however a it's grown into somewhat of a small tree. When I walked over to check it out..(plenty of poison Ivy in the mix so I know not to touch anything) It had an unfamiliar look to it. And the deep crimson stalk and branches, give me the same feeling as when you see a snake or a spider with special markings. If I had time I'd run over there today to take a picture of it.

I hope i'm wrong, because the neighbor, who cuts the grass there, must have brushed by it on the latest cut.

There are some sumac's that arent poisonous, but this one doesn't have those traits...

Oh and recently... I turned a trip to go get some craigslist snow tires, near Syracuse, into a trip to a cool nature park with tons of trails... along the trails were plaques describing some of the animals and vegetation, and that's where I got the first heads up on poison sumac.

BUT WAIT.. digging deeper, i think it might only be this...only toxic if you eat it.... "pokeweed" http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/weedgui ... asp?id=270

I have plenty of "poke" in my flower beds.... or, ex-wife's flower beds. I just mowed them all down this past Sunday. They've been growing unchecked for about 10 years now.
Folks down here eat the young poke leaves. Elvis even had a song about it. Poke Sallet Annie --- Check it out. THE KING!!!! LOL

I thought I was over Poison Ivy since I left Ny in 2000, but just my luck, Mangos over here are in the same family. Just got over a huge rash 1 week ago cutting a tree down. Found some stuff that is its killer if you get it on you.

I put it on and cover up head to toe. http://www.teclabsinc.com/products/poison-oak-ivy/tecnu

I still have the rest of the tree to cut down today if it stops raining. :bang:

The sap from the Mango gets on your tools and clothes and can be retransfored back on your skin and you can break out again. :bang:

Had a huge breakout of Poision Ivy in 1976 when I worked for Monroe County Parks Department, it was over 50% of my body.

Live and learn again I guess.

can't stop laughin'!!! sorry Marc but I know you were being sincere and yes it's a serious subject , go back in your post, you might have to treat your "Monza"s itchy butt!!! sorry but did anyone else see that?
It's late ...just in a great mood is all...the worst exposure to a noxious weed I encountered was actually poison oak. I have heard of ppl actually being hospitalized if they accidently ingested it somehow perhaps rubbing ones face or touching their mouth. Pretty awful and it wasn't a whole lotta fun cause you pretty much let it run it's course and treat it with plaster style cake and kool baths was all that would soothe. Damn getting itchy thinkin about it  :?
P.S. Marc, stay clear of that one, it is more dangerous in the early spring and different weeds are at differing intervals depending on humidity and other weather factors such as heat and pollination time tables...it might be somewhat dorment right now but I'd steer clear of it, maybe pour a bit of gas on it and start it on fire but don't let any sap or liquids be exposed to your skin and throw away your gloves after disposal! wash off the rear end of the Monza incase you brush up against it!! then neither one of you will get an itchy you know what.... :th:
