I got to take My 69 Firebird Around the Local Road Course!

Postby cammerjeff » Wed Oct 15, 2014 9:31 pm

A couple of weeks ago I received a last minute invitation to the Trans Am Series Celebration, as they were looking for a little more then Mustangs. So my 69 Sprint FB and My Friend Mike with his 70 Formula (with a T/A hood) showed up. I was surprised that no Mopar's, AMC's or even a Camaro showed up. It was open to any 1965-1972 Pony Car, or even any of the under 2 Liter cars like Alpha's.
But I was able to surprise the road course guys with my 6 cylinder Bird. I have done a little SCAA racing along time ago (seems like another Life Time) So after a couple of laps I remembered how to do it.
I didn't tell them that my Little 6 was actually 301ci, and was bigger than the 289's and the same size the 302's. My car is set up for the 1/4 mile so sits to High, has 4 wheel drum Brakes, and the tires are to tall. But I could still downshift so I didn't need the brakes that often, and once I remembered to tap the brakes to set the front end I could keep up with the Fords in the turns, and actually overtake on the 2 decent straights. Had a lot of fun and scared the wife a little so all is good.
Mikes 70 Bird, and the Red Mustang Fastback were a lot Faster than me, but I could pass some of the stock Mustangs, and keep pace with the rest of them. Cool overcast day so that may have kept some people away.

Waterford is a short 1 1/2 mile track that is a blast to drive around. The Detroit area Corvette Club use to hold autocrosses on the track around the fourth of July, maybe they still do. Very twisty, somewhat hilly, with varying radius corners. I've run there in a few cars, couple of different Cosworths, Monza and GMC Typhoon. http://www.waterfordhills.com/open-track-days.shtml

Here's a couple of my cars on the pit lane, leaving for a hot lap. The Monza from about 1979, the Cosworth about 1982.
