I know , I know, it's like "Tilsonburg, the more my back aches when I hear that word" hahaha....Tilsonburg is the capital of Tobacco country in Ontario Canada and where a lot of teenagers , our age now, used to work for summer jobs. Only thing was, it really sucked as back breaking and hot an' shitty types of summer jobs go! Picking tobacco 18 hours a day for 40 bucks!...builds character in youth my uncle used to say :!:   pecker wood drove the tractor!....sooo, gettin' back to the "manual" style tire changers by "arm-strong" do any of you guys or gals, yes apperantly gals can use'em too, and I'm looking to purchase one at Princess Auto but wanted some input from you'all, that is if any of you are still able to type cause you still can after using one of these things  , any ideas, oh and are there any that have a "bead braker" air assist attachment and manual bar for dismount and mount.....anyone?

Hi Ron,
At any rate it would beat a big rubber mallet and a few screw drivers that my buddy and I used one time back in the day for a flat on his vega.

Yeah what Nick said! also beats the old bumper jack bead breaker trick, and still had to swing the sledge to get them to pop (with out hitting your car the wheel or your helper, they always leave when you clip them with the hammer) especially since you need an old car for that now. Harry

I've had one of the Princess Auto manual tire changers for 20 years; I don't use it much any more, mostly because there are 3 Auto Repair places within a couple of miles of home that let me use their equipment any time I want. But for a long time it was all I had and it worked great. It can be a little hard on aluminum wheels, unless you can get a hold of the plastic lip protectors that some of the professional tire dealers use.
When I was using it regularly, I had a 2' x2' piece of 1/4" steel plate anchored to the concrete floor of the shop; it had threaded holes in it so I could bolt the changer to it while it was in use and then store it out of the way when it wasn't.

I bought a manual changer about five years ago but have never used it because I ran out of space in the garage to mount it to the floor. It's still in pieces on the shelf. If any one is interested in it, they can pick it up for $75. I need the shelf space. This is what it looks like, http://www.amazon.com/Tire-Changer-Diam ... B001989EZE

Hey Spencer, great tip to be able to remove it for sure!...Harry, I did the bumper jack thing as well many moon ago when bumpers were supposed to stay in tact  now I would use the 4X4 I guess....Dick, are those ones still available ? it looks like a more durable unit than the Princess auto one, too bad I'm so far away, probly wouldn't pay to send it all the way out would it. Somebody better grab her up for that price, wow! Thanks Guys! I was just made aware that Summit carries one as well, gonna check it out but 90 bucks from Princess auto still pretty affordable and maybe all I need, don't know, just worried I'll break something...me

That is a good price for that changer Dick. It is $60+ more at Northern tool and they are usually quite competitive! Here is a link to their selection. Harry http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... 8863_18863

That tire changer from Northern looks a lot like the $40.00 model from Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-t ... 69686.html
With all the 20% off coupons floating around you should be able to get one for $32.

I picked up an ancient Bishman for about $200 around 5 years ago.It would destroy modern wheels, but its been handy for dismounting old tires going for scrap so I can keep the wheels.
I don't know how anyone can break the beads on old tires manually. I have to move the tire all the way around on the Bishman before the air assist can pop them rusted up, hard as iron tires loose.

Have had the Harbor Freight one for about 12 years, bought a bubble balancer also. Great if you live in the middle of nowhere. ( closest tire store was 40 minutes away.)

Only problem was the beadbreaker was spreading apart so I welded a scrap piece of metal on it and it was fine after that.

Bolted it to a small concrete pad I poured for it outside . Painted only once in 10 years in AZ.

Worked on everything I tried it on , not good for fancy wheels though.

Breaking Bad.... beads is a pain on a good day, this has been the hardest part over the years. I have used the bumper jack, our home made tire machine (just a foot with a 3' handle for leverage) driven over them with full size trucks, mounted them (the scrap ones anyway) on the car and driven them around the yard/down the alley to break them loose and used a tire hammer and nearly every pry/crow bar known to mankind to break them loose, only paid for three +/- dismounts and bent a few wheels in 35 years. You just need to be more driven and frugal than most (I am into H-Bodies remember and it shows up in the strangest places). My first car I changed dumpster tires 3 or 4 times a year for 3 years and certain not for profit projects since. Now I just pay and drive my daily drivers tires! Harry

Howdy everyone,
I picked up a manual tire changer yesterday at Princess Auto for 90 bucks and hopefully today get a look at it. It was a far more important priority to blast home before 1 oclock to unload the Sunturd and take her for a cruise, 3rd time now burning up the gas stabilizer lol. Weather is so unpredictable at the moment but take what I can cuz the 5o below stuff will eventually be here  Thanks for everyones imput and Dick, the one you have for sale is a bargain!...wished I lived closer...Harry, you mallet wielding maniac, the other day I had a young feller workin' with me and needed him to hold a bar steady....so I could pound a "rock" out from between a set of duals on one of the trucks out in the field we were working...I immediately started to laugh as I thought of what you wrote here the other day, wel this made him even more nervous and when I said the words, "c'mon, trust me" this added to the laughter and I told him to close his eyes and it would only be worse if he moved..  ...hopefully the tire changer works and that I'll be able to use it with all of my parts...the ones attached to me! It looks as though the key here is to anchor it securely to some sort of base and Spencor's idea to be able to remove it should work as well, ( need the shop room cuz son-in-law is running a tinting biz in it.) again thanks to everbody...it should save a pile of doh cuz out here the tire shops thinks everyone's independantly wealthy, at 25 bucks a wheel! I'll change the 4 over for daughter and the changer is paid for basically!.....stay tuned!

P.S.another reason for my own tools... Fountain Tire in Bonnyville Ab.will never be allowed to change a WHEEL BARREL TIRE for me, they marked up the edges of my 13 inch snowflakes last year as they didn't put protectors on them and didn't tell me that they had damaged the edges  when I told them what happened afterwards, they offered to sell me other rims at a discount, ya like that's gonna happen! a-holes...that's why they don't let the customer go and watch but I'll stand there at the door at any shop and keep an eye on what is going on or tell'em I'm going somewhere else!

Good luck with it and you will love it. Remember....... soapy water is your friend ( keep a spray bottle handy ) :th:

Also......... keep some valve stems handy ( all lengths ) and a valve core tool. :th:
