introducing myself

Postby b_pappy » Mon Nov 17, 2014 9:57 pm

Hey guys,
This seemed as good as place as any to introduce myself.
I'm getting ready to scratch that itch to build a V8 Vega. Wife is fully on board, so I just need a good starting point.
I'm looking for 71-73 hatch or wagon to start with. I like the thin bumpers, and the "Camaro" type grill. My thoughts are to build a very factory appearing car, if they had ever done it. But a Motion clone is entertaining. So, we'll see.
Finding a good starting point is the problem.
Drivetrain will probably be 383, and I want a 700R4 trans. The car needs to be very streetable, and freeway capable.
Everything else is open to discussion.
I'll be doing lots of reading here, trying to catch back up on the builds. I sold my last V8 Vega (a wagon) around 1990, had 5 different Vegas at the time. I should have just squirreled one away back then.
If you guys hear of a good starting point, or a partially complete project let me know.
Thanks,
Bruce

Thanks for the welcomes. Some beautiful cars here, especially "Waybad" and "Dadhad1". Actually two color schemes I am considering.
Thanks for the lead on the one for sale. I'm in So Cal, so trying to stay semi-local. However, for the really right car...

You would think so, but man, I looked at some really bad starting points. Either half done cars, for too much money, some very rusty cars, more junk, and a very but, and similarly priced race Vega.
Eventually I found an uncut, unmolested, all original Kammback in Tucson, Arizona. That's right, I found my starting point.
I'll start a new thread and post pics in a little while.
I will have a ton of questions, like wil a 700R4 fit? (serioulsy, that's my first question)
I think I mentioned, I'm not new to Vegas but I have forgotten a lot since 1990, and having had many other cars since then.
Thanks,
Bruce

yes it will fit, but unless you already have one, personally id go with a 200r.

Cool, thanks. Yes, one of those two, I'll decide as I get closer.

Bruce,
Like all the others have said, welcome to the best H-body site in the world. If there is help needed you will get it here.
Also, I definitely agree with anorexicvega, go with a 200 4r, it has better spacing in the gearing, is smaller, and lighter than the 700, and can easily be found with universal bolt pattern and built for the hp and torque you will be working with from a 383. They live behind 9 sec Grand Nationals and I have seen one live comfortably behind a mild 455 in GTO, so a well built one will be as strong as you need.
