Necessary stuff we hate to do.

My father in law passed away on October 6th. He was 85 but his health was great and it was a shock to all of us. The one thing I've come away with is the need to have your affairs in order. He did. I can only imagine grieving while pouring through papers trying to find the funeral/burial/insurance information. The same day my Mom was rushed to the hospital with internal bleeding caused by the blood thinner she's taking. She's back home now. She has a hard time with stairs, my Dad is legally blind and they're still in a two story home. Hopefully this will be the catalyst to convince them to move into a retirement home. ALSO, if your parents are getting up in age, and they haven't signed anything over to a family member, they may want to speak with an attorney. If they go into "assisted living" and hadn't signed away their home etc, the property, 401-K, even automobiles will have to be sold prior to medicare starting to pay anything. This has to be done 5 years PRIOR to them needing the assisted living, so being pro-active is necessary. Personally, I want my sons and their families to get what little I leave behind. Hate to be a "Debbie Downer", but wanted to give a heads up to you guys.

Bill, my sympathies on the passing of your father-in-law. Another thing to mention on having things in order, my wife and I each have a living trust and they spell out everything, including what to do in the case of death as well as any distribution of tangible goods/monies.

Also do not forget to discuss a medical and an overall "Power of Attorney" with your attorney, and any other consul/children/loved ones you may have to consider, we must try and limit the discomfort and confusion etc. Harry

Bill, my condolences on the passing of your Father in law.
My Father in law has been gone about a year as well and had some affairs in pretty good circumstances however my Mother in law struggled with the money stuff afterwards but he was in a care facility for some time so she was able to take care of things with her kids to get the" Ducks in a row" Very well said and thanks. None of us ever want to dwell on this subject but we will need to as a courtesy some what for others and Family.

I had a neighbor pass away a few years ago and had a heart attack...didn't make out anything. His daughters had to go through hell to get things in order and I remember as I was helping get things done in the house and garage every few min. his oldest daughter would brake down and say "DAM YOU DAD!!", didn't wanna do that. Having lost my wife, I had no plan at the time and when it was all over, I was in debt over $12k. I contacted an funeral service here in Va.Beach and they sent a rep. over and when all was said and done I had a plan that will take care of every thing from AtoZ. Cost? $7,917. All my kids have to do is make a call and every thing is taken care of by the company, that's not a bad deal when you look at it costing $14k in ten years.I made this deal in 2012. I know how hard it is to loose a loved one and my heart goes out to you and your family.(ps. I made out a living trust also) Hopes this will help somebody.
