I just got Stupid (again) and bought a new Summer toy

A 2006 Pontiac Solstice Modified by Chuck Mallet #024 out of Aprox 100. I always wanted one, and could never afford one until now. Pretty Base Model only has the Preferred Package that means the factory A/C was reconnected. 6.0 LS2, 5-speed manual 3.93 Limited Slip rear axle. It is Scary fun! Just picked it up from a Broker in Fort Wayne Indiana. Drove it 3 hours home. It was 60F and almost sunny today in southern Michigan, had to make room in the Garage. It only has 18,000 miles and is almost flawless. Only thing that doesn't work is the Cruise Control. I can't believe I bought a 400HP car with 2" less wheel base than my Astre!
Not Crazy about the Color, but it does really make it a sleeper, the badges almost blend in.

Wow, very cool! I hear the weight balance actually is pretty good on those, even with the V8.
Congrats!

Awesome; a v8 swapped small, RWD GM car. Why does that concept sound so familiar.......
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Thanks, I am still geeked up over it. funny you should mention Miata's I had a 1989 that I was going to have converted into a Monster Miata with a Ford HO 302, 5-speed and RX7 rear axle. Went to LA to drive one on November 1992 drove a demo and was really impresses, 250hp really made it into a different car. When I visited you could bring your car to the conversion Company and for around $8000 they would put in Used salvage parts with a 2 year warranty. But by the time I had saved up the $$$ to have it done, they had changed there policy and would only convert new cars that the buyer ordered thru them, and they used all new parts. The cost now went up to over $43000, out of my pocket book.
I will say my Miata was more usable, the top operated much easier, it actually had a usable trunk. And I mod'd it so it would run low 14's in the 1/4, it would surprise alot of people. But nothing like this car! I can live with its unergo interior features. The Sunvisors are useless, the Pwr window switches are hard to reach, the cup holders are also. The car has Pwr Locks, but no Pwr windows switch's? You can lock and unlock the doors with the Fob, and they automaticly lock when you start driving, and unlock when you shut off the car. Kinda weird to me. BUT I DON"T CARE!!!!! .

Miata, too? Then you know.
My intentions for mine was to swap a 215 into it....... of course.
However, it runs GREAT in stock form! I've already placed in 2 rallycross races 1 & 2..... and my co-driver took fastest time of day on his first rallycross last weekend in it. Oh.... I get 30 mpg, too .... it's my daily.
I'd drop it like a rock for one of those Mallets. My LS2 in the HEAVY GTO is a dream...... I'm so jealous of yours.

Now post some video!!!!!!

Thanks Dwight,

Unfortunatly I am not really a Video guy, and the weather here started to turn towards winter here yesterday, 1st snow flurries of the year. I hope to take it out one more time on Saturday to out local cars & coffee B/S session on Woodward, Fingers crossed the weather stays dry and they don't decide to salt the roads today for some reason. After that it will be in the garage for the season.
I still can't believe the timing worked out. I have missed having a convertible to drive the last couple of years, and I have always found that you can get a good deal on a new convertible in Michigan in late October/November so I started looking at New Miata's and Fiat 124 Abarth's. Both would sticker around $30,000. Drove both I liked the way the Miata drove, but I really do not car for the styling of the new model. The Fiat looks good to me, and handled just like the Mazda (imagine that as it is the same chassis) but the little 1.5 Turbo had some odd habits. It seemed to have a dead spot in the torque band at 4000-4600 rpm. so I decided to look at what I could get used.
All the 1st gen Miata's near me were either used up and rusty, or to far away. S2000's were the same, then on a whim I looked for V8 Solstice's and 3 interesting cars popped up, 2 mallets and 1 LS7 owner conversion, the other 2 were to far away and about $5000 more than the car I bought, but they were brighter colors, but the LS7 car was a Automatic, no thanks. Then I looked at the sleeper gray one last saw it had less than 20,000 miles, was a manual and had A/C and was only 3 hours away worth a call. Spoke to the broker that was selling the car made an offer sight unseen and was suprised when the owner took my offer that was $7200 under the asking price. this was on the Tuesday before thanksgiving, I was able to work out the financing and insurance by Monday and pick it up Tuesday, Monday here was pouring rain and Tuesday was 55F and almost sunny so I decided to drive the car home. I have only driven it a total of about 5 hours, but what a ride. And can you believe I actually bought a car that my insurance company considers stock? Because it is one of the numbered cars and was converted when new and sold that way thru a Pontiac dealer with a full GM warranty Haggerty considers it stock, and the insurance is $156 a year less than my 97 Firebird Convertible was? If I would have bought a car that was converted after it was sold new, or owner converted it would be considered modified and the insurance would be almost $500 a year more. Almost seems like I was destined to own this one.
From the records it looks like all the PO did was change the oil every spring, and rotate the tires, so some PM is due, along with a set of new tires.
And yes it is faster than the 2004 GTO I had for 4 months back in 2008, I good friend of mine was in financial trouble and I agreed to take over the last 4 months of his lease, that GTO was tame and easy to launch compared to this car. It did weigh almost 1000lbs more with the same HP and less rear gear, but did have a T56. I wish this car had that trans, but I think I will just change the rear axle ratio from the 3.91 to a 3.23. The transmissions 1st gear ratio is 3.75 so hooked up to the 3.91 rear gears 1st gear is almost useless exept to burn up the tires! I already owe Harry a ride this spring!

Well I just got some of the paperwork and found out I am the 3rd owner of the car, the 1st was a Woman!!!! So I guess it is a Chick car after all)

Made it to Woodward this morning and met a couple of current GM Corvette powertrain engineers, they were impressed with the installation and were surprised that I didn't experience any banging under acceleration as the measured the side clearance on the exhaust manifolds at 8mm and GM policy is a min of 25mm.

I have to go do family christmas things now so I have to go.

The Turnout was small, but not bad for early December, brisk 38F but dry weather. I only took this shot as I left with a 944, V-series Caddie, and a late 50's Volvo. Earlier there were some 30's Street rod Chevy's, Corvette's, and several WRX & Hopped up Subaru's. The car seems to not like ford owners as the hood lift struts must be a little weak, both times a Ford Guy stuck his head under the hood it started to come down on its own!!!! LOL So some new struts are on order.
Now to start the PM that has never been done as far as the maint records show.

Thanks Dick, I will be happy to.
Also we need to get you to bring a car this spring to the Autozone Book Store, you live a lot closer to it, and on nice days there are some very interesting cars there.
