ghost problem

Postby mirage_brat » Fri Mar 18, 2016 8:39 am

Im chasing ghost on this problem... I was at work last night and I went to move my car on my first break... well it fired right up but when I backed up out of the previous spot I put it in drive and went 20 feet and it just died on me so I thought the ignition control module went out but I sprayed some starting fluid In the carb and it fired right up but wouldnt stay running... found out the fuel pump wasnt turning on so I checked the fuse and it was good... let it sit until lunch break turned it over then stopped and all of a sudden the fuel pump turned on and now the car runs and drives... any suggestions on what could have caused this???

No fuel pump could be several things, a bad ground as mentioned or some other connection that is loose or corroded. The fuel pump gets its' power through the oil pressure switch which is a safety feature. It prevents the pump from running without the engine running (oil pressure). So, it could also be a bad oil pressure switch or more likely just a bad fuel pump. The fuel pump is basically just a small electric motor in the gas tank, their could be some sludge or rust that got in it and stalled it out. If you don't find something obvious with the wiring or external to the tank I would suggest dropping the tank (easy if it is near empty) and pulling the sender unit/fuel pump and doing a inspection inside the tank.

I pulled the tank and cleaned it up and put a new pump in it before I put the fresh motor and tranny in I cant remember if I put a new pressure switch in though

To test the pressure switch, put a jumper wire between the pink and blue wires. The fuel pump will then run whenever the key is on.

I've repaired burnt/corroded body to taillight harness connector in left rear, especially if there rear panel drains get plugged and the connector has been sitting in water.
