A buddy of mine did a slick trick with his deck.
He cut the panel out of a non GT dash and installed the deck behind the panel inside the dash. He re-mounted the panel on spring loaded hinges with a catch pin.

The dash looks totally solid and uncut with a junk old 2 post radio in the dash.
But when you pull the little (Hair size) catch pin....the panel/door opens up to reveal the deck.
It is very quite cool!

I plan on using an early 80's shaft mount digitaly tuned, auto reverse ac/delco deck from a corvette or truck, mounting two 3" factory replacement gensens in the center speaker location at 90 deg to each other sort of like ^. Use sheet metal and make chanels to guide the sound through the grill. The sound will reflect off the windsheild, and seperate into two distinct channels. The gensens will take 40 watts, mount a small amp under the front seat and use two small speaker boxes in the hatch, if you have the original rear speaker option, mount a small dual voice coil sub woofer and amp behind the old grill.

Oops forgot to say, play an mp3 player through the tuner.

I dunno, I couldnt stand the AM radio that came with the car. I just cut the dash and the aftermarket radio fits perfectly in the hole I cut. I guess Im not one of those purists like that.

Well, if it's anything like the controllers we sell at work, Din refers to a standard size sleeve that is mounted into a certain size opening then the chasis is slid into the sleeve (non shaft mount).

i went and listen to the custom audio stuff .i wouldn't put that junk on my lawn mower. bad sound and cheap looking.

A lot of modern decks have so many goofy un-needed features its sickening. Sometimes at night you can see the whole cabin of a car lit up just from the deck.
To me anyways, Its just annoying to have to much light inside my car at night.

im going to hook up an amp to my stock am/fm . thats what we did many years ago . right now i have a set of bostan aqustic with the stock radio . just needs to be a little louder. i want to keep that stock look.

I'm planning on using the 'radio delete' panel from my '72 Coupe parts car in my '74 Panel wagon. A set of speaker in the dash like Monza Madness suggested, with a head unit and a pair of speakers hidden in the front cargo compartment should do nicely. I have a couple of the cargo covers, so one will get modified to hold the rear speakers. Of course, I actually need to START WORKING on the car first...

What were "they" thinking making CD's that dont fit between the shafts?

I looked at the stuff referred to above and it looks like cheap junk. Spent a bunch of time surfing for other options but it seems none of the mainstream car audio companies (Alpine, Kenwood etc.) make shaft mount head units anymore.

I have two dashes so I will cut one to accept a DIN mount radio. None of the 10+ possible spots to cut in speakers were made in my Monza! I have converted the 4x10 dash speaker to stereo 3.5"s and have a couple 6x9 boxes in the rear of the hatch.

Deck and 4 will do for now, maybe a remote cd changer later in the glove box.

That stocker AM radio sure is huge eh? Could be worth a couple tenths outta there.

But then again there are cigarette burns above the ashtray so it's not like it's a mint dash anyways. If I ever find a nice spare GT dash I'm gonna snag it up to stash away.
