4X10 dash speaker

Postby 77 Spyder » Wed May 09, 2007 9:20 pm

Does anyone know what speakers will interchange? I would assume if I want to use the oem bracket, I am going to need a speaker with the square magnet.

I have my dash just about back togther, & realized the speaker coil is open, no impedance, so its shot.

I don't care much about the quaility of sound, But I want something, that will at least sound as good as a new delco should. I supposed most of the originals, are dried up cracked, & are like the one I have?

A nice little bit of fabrication, Zeke! Back in the day(I've been a car audio installer for 30+ years) you could buy an adapter for the 2nd gen Camaro to mount 2 3.5" or 4" speakers in the 4X10 location. The mounting bracket needed to be re-bent to fit the H-body, but it did fit. If you can find an install shop that's been in business for 20 years, they MIGHT have one lying around.

Carl, radio shack used to sell direct replacements, there is a place in hemmings auto news that will rebuild your original, if you're looking for hard core restoration. I like Chris's idea, true stereo sound, nice one Zeke.

Don't mess with 4x10s. All the speaker manufacturers have already discontinued, or are in the process of discontinuing them.

Isn't the H-body 4 x 10 speaker a round magnet design ?

I installed one just so that you couldn't look through the grill, from the outside, into the back of the dash.

That's basically why I wanted a oem style speaker with the cloth. I don't want to see anything through the dash slots, That & you almost have to have fabric covering it, or the first time something drops in there, it will be dancing on the paper cone forever.

I found a local stereo shop that has a replacement, But I'll have to fab a mount for it.

boston aqustic makes a short magnet 4x10. i used it in my wagon with little modifcation to the stock bracket. what i did do was get some of the black materal that goes over the speaker so it looks like stock when you look on the dash. i got the black material from under a chair. cut to size and glued it on.

I went ahead and got 2 3" speakers installed in that hole of my car. Had to make a mount to fit. It is ugly from inside the dash, but you can't see it from outside the dash or looking through the windshield.

If you are going to put a piece of cloth over the speakers you could pretty much do anything you want in there and nobody would ever see it.
