Stereo Speakers

Postby kline1 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:41 pm

I have to go over to where the car is in storage and grab some shots.

However , after looking closer at the following build sheet (see attached, I already had the picture in the Archives)...

U80 RR SEAT SPKR -- (Rear Seat Speaker)

, it says speaker and not speaker(S).

So I am thinking that this is not refering to the speakers at the rear seat panels but the rear speaker in the hatch area.

Maybe Marco, can confirm this. But I will take pictures, hopefully tomorrow.

The rear speaker option was not located in the seating area, but in the carpetted area in the hatch, driver's side. I guess this option gave you 'stereo' sound, lol. One speaker up front under the dash, and one in the back. Audio was obviously of paramount importance to GM in those days.

 So if you were looking out the right side window or left side window you would get the balance set, on the stereo???? I was under the impression the ring adjustment behind the knob was a fader to the rear speaker, but I realy do not know because I have not owned one these systems that was still working, after 30 years of heat and normal wear n tear I left the original wirring in place just in case some one had the itch to listen to the olde's in mono/fader stereo am/fm with 8 track. My old Led Zepplin 8 track would sound good on Dazed and Confused.Mike

With this new information, I doubt my rear seat speakers are factory. Maybe Dealer Installed? Whoever it was, they did a nice job...

I would think no dealer installed. Other than the door panels, that is the most common place for people to throw in a set of speakers, and a good spot for them too, easy to install, hide wiring etc.

A previous owner installed speakers above the ash trays in my Skyhawk. I'm still looking for replacement interior panels that are the same color as Kline1's.

Speaker grille set up's

Postby MIKESMONZA » Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:32 pm

That is a good reprensentation 70's style aftermarket radio equipment of how to install rear speaker's in a coupe, wagon or hatchback with low flush mount grille's that would take a lot of abuse. and you have a also on the coupes the rear area under the back glass and between The seat back. On the hatch backs I have seen those Intusive wedge packs style mounted everywhere. some really small "newer design" speaker coud be installed in the  little cover for the jack and tire tool at the rear lamps,,, but my plastic cover is losing the grille bars and is realy britlle just a roumd the grille like openings and I was  thinking of adding a temporary or set of covers much like the flush mount style in the picture's above ,also that is where the most of the insulation in the body at the foward rear wheel well's is thickest from the factory,Mike
