Monza Electric fan install?

Postby bill1978v8 » Wed Jul 04, 2007 9:31 pm

I know the monza came with an auxillary electric fan as an option. Does this mean there is a relay in the electrical system that I could wire in my electric fan?

I believe that was used with cars with AC. If you have an AC car there may be some wiring for it. Not sure exactly where it got its' power source from, would have to try and look at some schematics.

Hmmmm, I wonder where it does get its power. I have one of those fans around here somewhere. I'll have to take a look to see what the connector looks like and see if that helps shed any light.

Does anyone have the wiring schematics for the Monza from 1978? I thought it was on there?

A/C condensor fan option with relay???

Postby MIKESMONZA » Wed Jul 11, 2007 1:18 pm

My 75 monza with factory A/C had a bracket with the fan mounted on it, attached to the lower core support and the bracket went up to the area at the hood latch and had a bolt staight down thru the Metal support which had a nut welded in the bracket, it had two wires on it one was a ground with a conection cut off,,, probaly used a relay, and a wire from the compressor and a hot wire from the nearest source to power it, but 30 years and several owners ago no compressor Just the bracket's a condensor and a fan when I got it.,,,, Also it was covering just the driver side as the set up took the air from the grille and under the bumper and forced it back thru the condensor and radiator,,, Mike

I got a 1978 Chevrolet wiring diagram book. It looks like the fan is for V8 HR models only. I snapped a picture but its not real clear. See the booster fan at the bottom? It looks like it comes off a thermal switch. If anyone really really needs it I'll scan it.
I saw one of those fans once on a 1976 305 notchback Monza with A/C. It was on the passenger side.

It could be set up with a relay to run when the A/C is turned on. I think that's what the original idea was. Thermal switch in a water passage works, too. Either one works the same-- they go to ground and allow the relay to turn on the fan.
