GM SI 105 amp upgrade

Postby HI WINDING MONZA » Wed Aug 29, 2007 7:54 pm

Has anyone tried one of those 105 amp upgrade kits for a GM 35 -65 amp SI alternator? I need to upgrade the amps due to the Taurus electric fan I will install . My current alternator is in good shape and farely new. Doug in Az 8)

I don't know about kits but I can tell u what to look for as I rebuilt 100's of these gm alternators over the years. It is definetely possible to achieve 140 amps from a 10SI series alternator using some 12SI parts and u can keep your stock looking appearance.

First u will need a heavy duty 12SI stator coil and rotor. The rotor should have at least 5A draw on 12V and the coil needs to be wound high. The 12SI rotor has long pointy/squareish shaped poles on it whereas the 10SI rotor poles r rounded.

Aftermarket heavy duty self exciting regulator module is the way to go here also. Some still have the dash light function enabled as well.

Get a 12 SI 94A rectifier to go in it as well. The heat sink has curved fins on it whereas the 10SI's r straight.

Any local rebuild shop should be able to supply u with these 12SI parts or a complete alternator and u can swap the guts to your OE castings.

Don't know all that fancy lingo up above.

All I do know is that I installed what I think is the CS130 style GM alternator. The alternator itself was on over a decade's worth of GM vehicles, but the alternator I bought out of the "Pick'n'Pull" was one off of a late 80's Buick Century I think. It's been awhile. Reason being... that is the car/engine that had the mounting ears 180* apart. Some cars have the holes spaced 120* apart, and I suppose if you were to make a bracket, it would work. But mine was a direct bolt-in. Best of all, I found a recent one at the boneyard, so on half-off day, I was out of there with a new $15 alternator! It has worked great ever since I killed my 65-amp unit. Wiring was really easy as well. Just bought the pigtail from Autozone, and spliced in two connectors, and that's it!

I've got a real , real tight fit in the back of the alternator due I had to use one of the rear alternator bracket holes for the frame plate attachment otherwise I would probally go with the CS-130. Doug in AZ 8)

the first kit didn't work at all. it had a bad stator. they sent the next kit and that one would only charge above 1200. so they sent me another regulater and still the same. so i sent it back and got a refund. i put all the stock parts back in and works fine.
