inhibitor switch (purple wires )

Postby AusRs » Wed Mar 05, 2008 7:25 am

ok now to describe where it is located
underneath the console around the wiring plug for the inhibitor switch
i have a heavy gage purple wire that has been twisted together ,looks like at some stage it has had terminals attached to it BUT there are NO spare places for them to be attached ....just 2 ugly bare wires twisted together :(
anyone have an idea ?

Let me check my wiring diagram and I'll post a little later. Mine are for 78's but it should be the same.

One use I do know of for heavy gauge purple is the rear window defroster.

on my 72 gt the purple wire was the main starter wire if i remember right it went to the nutral safty switch and in the engine bay it goes threw the oil pressure cut off switch then to the starter

seperate your wires and see if it will turn over if not put a butt splice between them that will basically bypass you nutral safty switch and make sure its not in gear any time you go to start it

if the car was a manual its for the clutch switch, automatic its for the nutral safty switch.

on further investigation
2 wires are on the side of the shifter (i presume that they are the reverse switch
there are also 2 terminals at the front of the inhibitor switch that are not connected (leads me to believe i have a dud switch :(
NOW the next question !!!!!!!!
WHERE would i get hold of a complete inhibitor switch ????///anyone feel like popping one in a bag and sending it to Australia ???

If it is the neutral safety/backup light switch you are looking for, I may be able to locate a NOS one. If you or anyone is interested let me know. cjbiagi@yahoo.com
