Gen Light on.

Postby Buscop » Sat May 10, 2008 10:45 am

Ok, I took off the intake manifold to paint it...no problem. Put it back on and then..then problems started. Gas leak..found it..new gasket on carb accl pump required. But...came into garage next morning and dash Gen light was lit and the alternator was warm. So what has caused this little bug to show up? Any guesses why the light would come on and the alternator get warm? Obviously the Alternator was being juiced by the battery but the car was shut off. I'm thinking either the alternator took a crap or there is another issue that I haven't discovered. Maybe the starter circuit? Is there a starter relay on this engine? (1971 350 Chevy small block with mini starter). So before I start ripping everything apart again..any ideas? Anyone? :bang:

I asked the Chevy experts on the web site JUST ANSWER and this is their reply.

If the diode trio in side the alternator goes bad the light on the dash will stay on with the car off.If the internal regulator "latches"on it will keep powered up once the power has been turned on and will stop once you disconnect the battery -it will go open unitl its powered up again. Its all internal parts.

link for the site.. http://chevrolet.justanswer.com/questions/

THERE IS A COST USE THIS SITE BUT I THINK ITS WORTH IT...GOT AN ANSWER IN 15 MINUTES... :D

That would of been my next suggestion. If it wasn't the ignition switch, it would be something inside the alt.

Turned out it was a cooked Stator...odd. Anyway the guys at the shop rebuilt it for me and upped the amperage to 78 Amps. and..painted it Chevy Orange!..all for $80.00 about a hundred less then a "new" one.
