Tachometer Calibration

Postby acstestinc » Tue Jul 15, 2008 7:21 am

I remember a post a while back on Tachometer calibration but nothing shows when I search.

I need to get my tach calibrated. I hate having a gauge that reads so obviously wrong !! lol. I tried 4 different tach's and the best was still off by 20%.

Has anyone replaced the mechanics of a stock H-body tach with a modern unit and kept the stock look ?

Do a search for Tim McCabe. He does tach work out of Canada. I had my 4 cyl tach converted and calibrated for a V8. Only $75.

Here is a picture of an article I downloaded last year. It is how to make the tach work with a V8. but nothing on calibrating it.

The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.

Tim not only modifies it to read the V6 or V8........ but calibrates it correctly. He did mine, too.
Great job.

That's Tim McCabe..... his car is the beautiful Green '73 Vega named "Kermit".

The Monza tach can be set for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder easily. If you ever installed a hard drive or motherboard in a computer and had to set the jumpers it's similar. Calibrating it is a totally different thing. I'd contact Tim.

Well I definitely pulled a "Homer Simpson" when I was playing around with the tachometer in my Spyder.

Somewhere along the line , probably when I pulled the dash to replace the heater core, I swapped the tach from my 80 Spyder parts car into my V8 Spyder. When I then tried to figure out why the tach was reading so high I "assumed" that the jumper was in the right spot given that it was supposedly set for a V8 already. Well it wasn't. Moved the jumper today and guess what ? Tach is now reading within a couple of percent off of actual.

DOH!
So anyway, what position did you put the jumper in? I know there are 2 slots or you just leave it out but I can't remember which setting is which.

Leaving out the jumper is for 4 cylinder engines. I'll have to double check which slot I have the jumper in now. I just know that it's in the "other" location then before. LOL

Not a big deal, I was just curious. It's been 15+ years since I had to do it. I think the slots are marked with 6 and 8 aren't they?

There aren't any markings. That would be to easy for GM. LOL
