HEI with Accell Super Coil Top

Postby MIKESMONZA » Sun Jul 20, 2008 2:05 am

,,,,My HEI Distributor is a 77 model vacumn advance ,,
and and has the Accell Super Coil Top. It's a a plug and Play Unit, has special cap for oversized Coil and special Ground strap under the coil
with new lower HEI cap and rotor and after maket trigger, not accell unit.

I have been experiancing some Ignition Problemn's,
#1 car runs fine ,then going dowm the road It feels like the Ignittion shuts off,
for a second or two then run's without fail.
,,,,,,#2 Then at idle and warmed up,,, it cuts in and out ,

So i suspected a cracked cap, moisture, loose wiring, Coroision
removed wiring and plug wires lifted cap
,looked all right,, no carbon tracks
no detriation of terminals,

But on closer inspection of cap's
 Plug in for tach and 12 volt's and found Ground finger had discoration and same on coil Ground end,( Half circle tang')
removed and wiped the down with alcohol,, found "arcing" marks on flatt males might be the Problemn???
will also check wiring harness Plugs Female's before I plug it in,
Removed Rotor and found sand Particle's in bottom of distributor base.
cleaned and removed that the after maket trigger,It had the White paste Dialectric Grease I had put on it lat fall,
the Screws were harder to remove, moisture?
Which Now is being replaced with Accell unit I had Bought to replace the Unit.

,,,,,And I have a Question is the Acell Coil Top "bonded" to the Coil?
,,,,,And other than the Moisture problemn any pointer's.

Note P.S. I found out how the Ground in the cap is Getting Moisture ,
 It is the Four Screws on top cover ,,,One was Looseend up, My curiosity is solved on rusty Screw Threads,in top section

I would SUSPECT the ignition module.
When you replace it, make sure to use the proper white heat sink "grease" compound for it.
I saw quite a debate on the Hotrodders Bulletin Board awhile back on the use of the proper heat sink compound to use when installing a new module.
Apparently the grease supplied with some cheap modules is not correct.

Thank's for the reply on the HEI Distributor,
The Ignition Module "Trigger" is probaly the weird part,

But the New Accell unit is Packaged with out the Grease,
Will get some more,

It has Two functions; It is a water proof heat resitant," Heat Sink,''
And keeps Corosion buiild up from water,on base under Module,

Moisture in CapTop where coil sits under custom ACELL CAP and Coil Unit.
Lost screw Holding top Down ,My fault or Loose Screw my fault,
Cause's
Also water MositureThat forms from caps exposure to Temperature Cycle's,
Or Humid day at Carwash,Engine Wash,,Top, and Bottom both need to be Aired Out,

TIP,,,,,On using shop air, to blow out excessive water ok,,
But leaves Oily particles and Moisture In Cap
not trapped in water seperator,in Hose Plumbing with out inline dryer,
Should be folowed by wipe of surface with Alcohol,or simular evaporating Cleaner's

Then after a few Minutes went back to same old Stuff,it was doing ,
then test driving it and coming back to park it. :bang:

Went out Monday and Tuesday looked for box in storage with Spare Excell Coil and Cap,
also a stock disributorCoil and Cap and found spare distributor in storage as well.

,Brought that out to change ,and try Combos to find problemn ,But have not gone that far Yet.
 So reading the last post and thinking I would try it. Removed the,,,, :cuss: Tach wire ,Same thing again, :?:

I appreciate the Help in advance.,,,,,,,,,,,,,HELP :bang:
Mike edit now I have carburetor trouble and will get back to this if still not working , Mike
