This may not be the answer you're looking for, but I'm a firm believer in "the biggest thing that will fit in the battery box". That 500a one you ask about sounds kind of small...

I like to run a Delco battery since you can get them in a side post only model instead of those funky dual post types that just look out of place. I think it's around 700 amps. Generally getting the highest amp that fits the group style ( believe mine is a group 75) is a good idea. However it all depends upon how much you want to spend and how long you plan on keeping the car. The group style dictates the size and type of terminals as well as their orientation.

I would agree, bigger is always better if it will fit, my optima has 800 CCA and never lets me down, I have one from 1995 and it is still good after all these years and needs no maintenance, and they do not leak or rot out the battery tray period, all my cars have optima's.
Good luck

True but they do make jump starts easier.

If you go to an auto parts store, it'll be a group size 75 for the original side post battery. I think the battery tray "may" accommodate the slightly longer group 78. That's for side post once again. If you're going to top post, look for a group 25 or 35 for the smaller size, and a group 24 or 24R (depending on +/- orientation). As far as cranking amps, that doesn't necessarily correspond to the group size. It depends more on the battery line. A typical store will have 2-3 lines. The premium battery will have the most cranking amps.

I have Optimas, and they 'can' be awesome batteries. On the other hand, I've seen about 50% of them come back with problems within a year. But then again you can get one that lasts 5 years. It's the luck of the draw. That's why they have a 3 year replacement warranty.

Batteries are really a crap shoot, I've put 5 batteries in my Blazer since I've owned it and its a '97. My S10 that I traded for this Blazer was an 89 and had the original battery in it. I've had some of the batteries last less than a year. The current one is getting up there in age for this Blazer, oh yeah the original battery didn't last a year in this Blazer......

But the the bigger the better, especially if you live in an area where it gets below 0 degrees and an Optima seems like a great idea if you have the cash.

I worked at a dealership autoparts supplier warehouse for 3 years. ( Motorcraft -AC Delco) The only batteries that lasted in this heat out here , the longest , were Motorcraft and Exide . I seen brand new car 3 month old Delcos come back bad. Quality on those went to crap after they started to make them in China. The battery in my race car is a Motorcraft that sat for a bunch of years before my boss gave it to me cause it was an outdated size. I've had it now for 8 years and it sits alot outside and its still good.

If I was you overseas. I would ask around to see what BRAND of battery is the best and lasts the longest first , then check for sizes.

Well I'm sure everyone has there own story and experiences. I guess I've just been pretty lucky but I can't remember ever having a battery that just went bad before it's warranty period of 5 -6 years or whatever it was supposed to last. I usually replace them when they get to that point figuring I am probably on borrowed time anyway and living in Chicago I really don't want to have to worry about it in the middle of winter. Considering every new GM car comes with a Delco battery I'll take my chances. For my daily drivers I guess it doesn't really matter that much to me, for the Monza a Delco battery just looks more correct even though the rest of the car and engine is modified.

Yeah, that's cool looking. I guess if I were a "purist" and wanted that stock look the Freedom battery would be the way to go. Fortunately (for me) I am not and a regular Delco looks fine. I don't know, but when I am judging cars at a car show I always hate to see some off brand battery in a otherwise nicely detailed engine compartment. It's just one of those things that stand out to me. I guess it doesn't make much difference for a daily driver, but for something you want to pop the hood on from time to time it just looks better.
