If all the wires are red, someone has extended them. If you open it up, you should find the normal RED-12v+, BLACK-ground, GREEN-coil-, and WHITE-light.

Just a note, some of those older tachs have a lot of needle bounce so you need a resister on the tach feed wire. 47000 ohms if I remember correctly. Available at Radio Shack.

Thanks for all the info. I got to looking and the engine has electronic ignition, no coil. Can anyone tell me how to hook up a tach up to that?

Q: what year is the 305? Is it definitely not an HEI?

On the HEI distributor cap there is a terminal Labled "TACH" right next to the one Labled " BAT".

The BAT should have a wire allready to it ( orangest-pink color)

You need a female crimp terminal on your green tach wire to attach it to the cap's" TACH" terminal.

Does anyone know what the letters inside the actual tach where the wires hook up to mean?

Sorry, I can't help you with the tach question, but I do have a question for you.

Since you are in Canada, are you putting a real Pontiac V-8 in your Astre?
GM Canada liked to put a Chevrolet engine in a Pontiac for some reason.
Pontiac didn't make a 305 V-8. But, Pontiac did make a 301 V-8 from 1977-1981.
The last year any GM vehicle had a Pontiac V-8 from the factory was 1981. So, it could be a real Pontiac V-8 and you are a trailblazer. Check out this 'unfinished' thread on putting a Pontiac V-8 in an H-Body: viewtopic.php?t=195

They are all letters. Theres a "T" "L" "B" and "G" My guess is that the G is ground and the L is for lights but I have no clue.

T-tach terminal
L-lights
B-battery (keyed source)
G-ground

My guess.
