Here's a PDF scan of the two pages in the 79 Service manual... It gives a general idea on how to properly replace fusable links.

No problemo, here in a few days, the whole manual will be available for download... takes forever to scan :)

An electrical fusible link is a type of electrical fuse that is constructed simply with a short piece of wire typically two wire gauge sizes smaller than the wire that is being protected. Electrical Fusible links are common in high-current automotive applications. The wire in an electrical fusible link is encased in high-temperature fire-resistant insulation to reduce hazards when the wire melts.

they are available in any automotive store under dorman brand

I like to hit the junkyards often so I've stocked up on free fusible links. (my guys don't charge me) 1990s era GM pickup trucks are a good source. They have a horizontal junction bar on the passenger side engine compartment firewall that's loaded with an assortment. The links have identifier tags on them with the wire gauge number. Just unbolt them and snip with some excess wire. That's my tech tip for the day.
