Easy one, just pop the tach out of the dash...you should see a little plastic press in piece that holds a small flat metal piece that bridges 2 points to tell the tach what motor its reading a 4, 6 or 8.
Just make sure its not loose, or just solder up the connection and you should be back in business...
Also check the filter wire at the dist. If its loose and shaky you can develope a bad connection there that makes the needle bounce all over. Have someone flick the brown wire lightly it and see if the needle jupms arounds
