Charging System Problem - Non -H-Body.

Postby EagleFish » Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:05 pm

1994 Ford Taurus 3.8, auto.

Installed a new altenator and battery because the battery was old and wasted from not getting charged.
New battery drained after two days of on/off local driving.
Tried two reman. alternators and one new altenator.
The new one is still on there.
Installed new battery - 900 cold starting amps.
Had wiring tested with no faults found, including the three in line fuse links.
Ground wires are good.Belt tension is good.
After the battery is hooked to the alternator and the engine started, the altenator drops to 4 volts or less output and of course, the battery gets drained in no more than 20 minutes of driving with no accessories running.
What is causing this problem?

It's a Ford. Sorry, couldn't resist that opportunity. Do Fords use a external voltage regulator?

Not on that year. Also chk the plug in connectors. The drivability techs at the Linc/ Merc dealer I used to work for changed a lot of them.

last i remember i think most places gave you a new plug end for the alt for those cause they usually went bad

whats the batt voltage off and while its running ? also with all the accessories on ? next thing to check is put a digital amp meter inline and check for loads while the car is off
