Starting issues on bird

Postby 92turbogtz » Sun Apr 11, 2010 6:54 pm

Since the bird has been off the road for a very long time, I would fire it up every so often. The last couple of times I tried starting it, the starter would not turn off even when the key is removed. Fortunately it didn't start before I was able to disconnect the battery.

Any suggestions? Starter solenloid? Ignition switch? something else?

When you turn the key you apply power to the solenoid which kicks in and in turn supplies the high amperage current to the starter through another set of contacts. When you release the key the solenoid should disengage. Obviously that is not happening, so it sounds like the solenoid is sticking.

Low battery voltage can cause that.

It was a brand new battery.

I'm leaning to the solenoid as well, but I didn't want to rule anything else out. This car has been off the road since 1995...
