Small temp sending unit to work w/ stock 75 Starfire gauge

Postby olds70supreme » Wed Jul 20, 2011 6:23 pm

Hello,

Trying to keep the front of my engine tidy and utilize the stock wiring harness connection for the temp sending unit. The stock '75 Starfire temp sending unit threads measure about 3/4" O.D. Is there another sending unit with smaller threads that will work with the stock gauges? I see many smaller sending units but am not sure what the stock one is ranged for.

Thanks.

Are you trying to move the sensor to a different area?

There is only one threaded port on the 215 engine (on the front of the manifold). I need a sender for the gauge and for the electric fan. I have a brass tee that I can thread both into but it is a smaller thread size. Due to space constraints I would prefer not to "bush down" the old 231 sender that I am trying to use.

I'm not so sure that putting two temp sensing units on a tee is going to work. I have a clone RPM air gap intake with the extra threaded coolant bosses at the rear of the intake. I thought it would be a good place to put the thermo switch for the fan. I never got the fan to turn on. I moved the switch to the front of the intake and it works properly. I think it needs to be in the coolant stream to work correctly.

Chuck,

I thought much the same thing, but without another threaded port to go to I figured I would try it and see. The previous owner had the exact same setup but kept his sensor. I had planned on putting my fan sensor closer to the coolant flow and seeing how it would work.
