Ground Wire> Only with key on?

Postby 77irishwagon » Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:04 pm

Do you guys know if there's a ground wire that i can splice into on the column or fuse block that is a ground only when the key is on>?

I have a after market switch panel , and the large power wire goes to the battery, I needed to put the ground wire on a toggle or splice into the factory wire/fuse block so that the led switch panel does not stay on all the time.

Thanks
Chris

I don't think the ignition switch controls or switches any grounds. You may have to run a separate ground wire to whatever you are installing and install a separate switch.

Put a relay on it, then control the relay of a keyed power source.

Didnt know that i could use the relay as a switched ground

Would i hook it up using the following:

86 Fused 12v
87 switched 12v from the fuse block (terminal that has power with key on)
85 to item that needs grounded (only want ground with key on)

Use 12 volts to control the relay (energize the solenoid of the relay). then you connect whatever you want to switch (ground in this case) to the contacts of the relay. One contact would just have a ground wire connected to it, the other contact would then provide the ground to whatever you run when the key is on.

Your relay pinouts aren't quite right; You would use 85 from ignition(or accessorry), 86+30 to ground and 87 will provide the needed ground to the switch panel.
Or you could just hook the switch panel ground wire to the black/pink on the steering column harness; it's the key-in-ignition-warning-buzzer. It would turn on the switch panel as soon as you put the key in, but that might not be such a bad idea.
