Horn question. 2 tone vs 1 horn

Postby gotmud7 » Tue Apr 10, 2012 1:30 pm

This is actually for a 2004 Chevy Impala, but I think it could apply to a Vega too.

The factory horns are a Hi and Low tone. Both do not work, I'm positive its not the relay and wiring to the horns. The GM replacement part (89046918) is a single horn. Is this common for a replacement horn to combine both hi and low into a single horn?
Thanks. Mark
The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.

The 2 original horns played 2 different notes;( F and A maybe? it used to be stamped into them) the replacement horn is most likely one or the other but not both.

I don't believe it's one horn...Let me say this: I don't know what that part number is, however I've bought, changed, billed out MANY Impala (& the like) horns & none were One horn. What I believe your running into is a "replacement kit" which comes all in one box (one part number) with wire adapters, ect. to make it work on a variety of vehicles...but it's still Two horns in the box, a high & a low. The wires jump from one horn to the other (like christmas lights) so if the first one has a connection problem in the plug area, it could be neither would work. Did you have them unplugged when you tested the wiring & both plugs would light a testlight? The horns going bad are somewhat a common problem, however most of the time it's just one & sounds like a sick duck. Lorne
