so having issues with my ignition switch and have always wanted to try a pushbutton setup. i have been searching and searching, but i cant seem to find a plug in play setup. i am picturing something that plugs into the factory harness that has a ignition switch and pushbutton starter. anybody seen anything like this? seems like something that should exist.

Ididit sells a steering column with "Push button" start, but to my knowledge, there's no kit available to retro fit with an OEM ignition switch. I have done this type of thing, but it's not exactly simple. It can be done a couple of different ways with latching relays or by installing a remote start system that has an external trigger input. Any type of push start would require removal of the steering column lock plate under the steering wheel.
You can however simply add a "Start" button to your dash, but you will still need to insert and turn the key on before pushing it. Pretty common on street/strip cars.

Maybe I am missing something. You turn the key one notch and that unlocks the wheel. Then the next two are pushing the rod down and turning the ignition and something. Then the start is in the next turn. All of that is in those two plugs on top of the colmn. So if it doesn't have relays now. Why do we need to add them? I would think some high current switchs and a push button would be the same as the factory.
I think I must not understand that switch correctly. Lol. As I like the idea of keeping the switch so the wheel stays locked.

I think I must have read way too much into your question; I thought you were looking for the no-key "Push to start" setup like a lot of new cars have. If all you want is a separate panel with a row of switches and a button like in a race car, it's fairly straight forward but not plug'n'play. Relays are not necessarily mandatory if you have switches that can handle the current. You would still have to put the key in to unlock the column, but then use the switch panel for turning on the various circuits. If you want a panel with a keyed switch in it, your could probably find something from a marine or truck supplier.
For a really simple setup, you could have nothing more than a generic aftermarket ignition switch and a start button beside it. But you will not likely find anything plug'n'play.

That would take care of using a key. Get a donor steering column and use the wiring harness to wire to these new components. So you can plug in to your factory harness (plug and play ish)

About the factory steering lock and ignition mech....maybe use the donor column and just defeat the locking mechanism. Just some shadetree mechanic idea's, lol..

Vey easy, just connect a switch like this one http://www.amazon.com/Momentary-Button- ... B001715TYS one side to 12 volts the other side to starter wire..you could then turn key on to energize ignition and unlock steering wheel and push button to start..make sure you find a momentary switch that can handle about 40 amps or more.

If you could find the right h size for ciggy liter hole it would be cool too

If you want to do this "All High Tech" then here is your answer! I'm sure this isn't cheap I seen them on "American Idiots" TV Show (American Chopper) You Know Father and Son Version. Pretty Cool just the same. Harry http://www.fistenterprises.com/ Their home page

no hightech for me on this. just want to unplug the wires from the column and plug them in to this new kit for push button start and toggle switch for ignition. i guess i will tare apart the switch to get an idea how it works and design something that will just plug in.

still really surprised nobody makes a kit for this as so many years of gm columns use the same plug for the ignition.

If you're going to do this, you really need at least 2 if not 3 switches; there are 4 different wires coming out of the ignition switch. Purple(start) which you obviously need to hook to a momentary push button, as well as Pink(ignition), Orange(accessory 1 which includes heater) and Brown(accessory 2 for radio, signals, etc). Loading all those onto one switch is not really a good idea for a couple of reasons; the total load can is really too much for even a heavy duty toggle, plus the two accessory circuits actually drop out while cranking so there's more amperage available to the starter and ignition.
It is surprising that no one makes a plug'n'play switch panel setup for 1970's GM vehicles; they do indeed mostly use the same switch. Now you've given me a business idea......

wasnt to bad to do. next time i would do it with one switch thats a dpsp type switch. but i didnt have any on hand this weekend. so, currently have two switches and the push button starter.
one switch for ignition power and coil power, and the other switch for acc power. will get pics up later today.
